Subject: Ward 5 Report: Recognizing Ward 5's Religious Institutions, DC
School Info, and Ward 5 Holiday Party on 12/13/2017
|
Neighbors,
For
decades, or even centuries in some cases, our religious
institutions have played a critical role in defining and supporting
our communities in Ward 5. Our churches and mosques are always
ready to partner to do the work of our community, often times without
fanfare or recognition. Today, I want to take a moment to share
D.C. Council recognitions I have been able to present to a few of
them.
Ceremonial Resolutions:
- Last week, I was
honored to introduce a D.C. Council Ceremonial Resolution
recognizing St.
Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish’s 125th Anniversary.
Since before the first houses were being built in Brookland,
the Parish has continued to be a cornerstone of the community.
- Masjid Muhammad
Mosque on 4th Street NW
received a ceremonial resolution to honor their 80th
anniversary earlier this year. The leaders and members of the
Mosque have opened their house of worship and worked to engage
residents to engender a greater understanding of the Muslim faith.
Street
Designations:
- Last week, I
introduced legislation to rename the block of Saratoga Avenue,
NE in front of Israel
Baptist Church to honor the church’s
contributions to the community under the leadership of Rev.
Dr. Morris L. Shearin, Sr.
- In 2013, we renamed
the block on Rhode Island Avenue, NE that is home to Greater Mount
Calvary Holy Church. The ceremonial
designation was given to honor the church and all they have
done to serve the community.
Additionally,
we recently celebrated and recognized Father Michael Kelley’s 40
years of pastoral leadership at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church,
my home Parish, located in Bloomingdale.
It is a privilege to work with these institutions and recognize
their contributions to Ward 5 and our city. As we enter the time of
giving thanks, I hope you will join me in thanking and recognizing
these longstanding institutions who continue to serve and lead in
our community
In Service,
Kenyan

D.C. Public
Charter School Board Releases 2017 Quality Rankings
|
|
|
The School
Quality Report (also known as the Performance Management Framework
or PMF) reviews schools on several factors, including college and
workforce preparation, English and math achievement and
year-to-year growth, as well as school culture as measured by
attendance and re-enrollment rates. Individual school reports are
available at www.dcpcsb.org/schoolquality.
Some of the highlights of Public Charter Schools in Ward 5:
- More than half of
returning 3rd graders at Edgewood's Inspired Teaching
Demonstration Public Charter School (PCS)
scored a 4 or 5 on this year's PARCC English Language Arts
assessment, while more than two-thirds of the returning 8th
graders at DC
Prep's Edgewood Middle PCS scored a 4 or 5 on
the PARCC Math assessment.
- Two schools, Washington Yu Ying
PCS, located on Taylor St NE, and Brookland's Elise Whitlow
Stokes PCS, have the highest re-enrollment
rate in the public charter school sector, at 98.6 and 98.3.
- KIPP DC – Connect
Academy PCS in Trinidad was
the 4th highest performing Tier 1 DC PCS.
- DC Prep Edgewood
Middle PCS and KIPP DC - College Preparatory Academy PCS in Trinidad were
recognized for having consistently earned a Tier 1 status
every year since 2012.
- Two Ward 5 High
Schools were recognized for the Highest Rate of 9th Graders on
Track to Graduate: Washington
Mathematics Science Technology PCHS in Arboretum
and Edgewood's
Washington Leadership Academy PCS.
- This year, Perry Street Prep
PCS in Woodridge saw more than a 14 point gain
in growth, on the English language arts and Math PARCC
assessments. This is the largest year to year gain in the
public charter school sector for growth on the PARCC
assessment.
(The PARCC is the Partnership for Assessment
of Readiness for College and Careers. It is the District of
Columbia's annual assessment of mathematics and English language
arts)
