D.C. Water to Give All Customers a Rebate

If you notice your water bill going down a little early this year, it's because it is—but it won't stay that way for long.

D.C. Water announced yesterday that it would be giving all of its customers a $9 one-time rebate this year, to be paid out as a credit on residential water bills. The rebate comes from a portion of a $20 million surplus that utility ran last year.

But just as D.C. Water giveth, it taketh away too. Late last year the D.C. Council passed legislation that would authorize D.C. Water to add 30 cents a month to most water bills as a means to create a $1 million relief fund for those residents whose homes are damaged by sewage backups that occur during floods. The annual cost to residential users will take a small bite out of the rebate, so don't get too excited about that $9.
