DOH Finds No Evidence of High Pancreatic Cancer Rates Linked to Water in Stronghold

The residents of Stronghold are not facing abnormally high rates of pancreatic cancer fatalities, according to a D.C. Department of Health study released last week.

The examination was prompted when some residentsclaimed that the neighborhood had higher than usual rates of the deadly cancer, suggesting that the deaths could be linked to the area's water supply. Ninety-four percent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within five years, according to the study. In 2013, 75 people in the District died from pancreatic cancer. However, "there is nothing that is environmental that is leading to any cause of alarm," said Najma Roberts, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Department of Health. "The data does not show elevated risk of pancreatic cancer."

The city says it has plans to present the results of the study to the Stronghold community.
