Community Event at the Park at Ledroit on Saturday, October 29, 10AM-3PM
Please join us on
Saturday! Here is a schedule of the
activities happening in the Park on 10/29:
10AM – 3PM: Crafts
and face painting for kids. Kids can
make their own fairy mask, super hero mask, hat or tiara. Pumpkin painting on
the farm starting at 11!
10AM – 11:30AM: Join us for DJ Jacq Jill.
11AM – 3PM: Howard University Hospital and Walgreens will be providing various
health screenings and flu shots. (Flu
shots will be provided for free or at a discount for the under-or un-insured.
If you are insured, please bring your insurance card.)
11AM- 1PM: Activities on
Common Good City Farm including Pumpkin
Painting, a soapmaking demonstration
and a cooking demonstration.
11:30 – 12PM: People Objects Play (POP) Performance. POP is a creative movement company of teenage performers. The company performs entertaining dance pieces to upbeat music using a variety of lively props such as balls, parachutes, hula-hoops, fabrics, umbrellas and more. After each brief dance, they invite audiences to participate in movement explorations. The company engages participants of all ages and abilities. POP is a resident company of Dance Place and an art elective in our Junior Staff job readiness training program. The company stresses professionalism, cooperation, collaboration, creativity and community building.
12PM: Danceplace Step Team. The Dance Place Step Team has represented the best in youth talent since its inception in 2000, hosting a core group of outstanding students in both academics and theatrics. The Dance Place Step Team has been nominated for a Metro DC Dance Award on two occasions, won 1st and 2nd place in Arlington County Step Competitions and performed at the Lincoln Theater, the Corcoran Art Gallery, the Gunston Arts Center, the Black Rock Center for the Arts and the Duke Ellington School Theater.
12:00PM: COOKOUT starts at Common Good City Farm.
12:00PM – Judging of puppy costume contest at the dog park.
12PM-2PM - Lucky Dog Animal Rescue will be at the park with dogs available for adoption.
12:15PM: Halloween costume parade for the kids and pups in costumes. (With non-candy treats at the end for the kids!)
12:15-1PM: More DJ Jacq Jill.
2:30: Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau is scheduled to stop by!! Come say hello!
1PM – 3PM: Poetry performances featuring Holly Bass, a multidisciplinary performance and visual artist, writer and director, and students from Howard University. About Holly Bass: A Cave Canem fellow, she has published poems in Callaloo, nocturnes (re)view, Beltway, Role Call (Third World Press) and The Ringing Ear, an anthology of Black Southern poetry. From 2008-2011, she was the Cullen Poet-in-Residence for Busboys & Poets, a popular cultural gathering space in DC. She was a founding member of DC WritersCorps and continues to work internationally as a teaching artist in schools, colleges and community centers. In 2011, she was named one of the “Top 30 Black Performance Poets” by The Root. She was voted 2012 Best Performance Artist in the Washington City Paper. In 2014, she initiated a year-round creative writing and performance program for adjudicated youth in DC’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.
We will also be joined by the following organizations: Mamatoto Village, Cleveland Elem. School, HU Hospital, DC Office on Aging, My School DC, Collective Action for Safe Spaces.
