Artwork in Progress by Rania Hassan
The past 12 months have been absolutely phenomenal for us. In May of 2012, we participated in Artomatic, a huge show with over 1000 artists. We both pushed the concepts and forms of our work and exhibited pieces that we were very proud of. Rania created a series of works that formed a story of a hand lifting, twisting, and lowering a dress. Twelve pieces that in turn formed her first stop action animated video. Sean created the largest glass pieces he had attempted and for the very first time utilized LED lighting to illuminate his panels. We were overwhelmed with the response. Sean received an Award of Excellence from the James Renwick Alliance, and sold two of the three panels. Rania sold six of the pieces to Prince Georges County and was offered a solo exhibition at the Montpelier Arts Center. The show resulted in a handful of commissions for each of us.

Then things got even better. Sean created a series of pieces based on Alice in Wonderland that incorporated video and electroluminescent lighting. A number of the pieces were exhibited in Aqua Art Miami with Alida Anderson Art Projects. Sean was invited to participate in the Artomatic sponsored International Glass + Clay, which featured a showcase of artists from Washington, DC, and Sunderland, England. A huge honor was Sean being invited to speak as a “Star of Tomorrow” at the Smithonian’s Renwick Museum panel discussion on the Future of Craft, beside craft giants Bruce Metcalf and Adrian Saxe. Sean was also part of a team of artisans who were tasked with the project to recreate the doors of the Library of Congress Adams Building in glass. The project will be featured in next month’s edition of American Craft magazine, around the same time as the completion of the installation.

And currently up, Rania’s first Solo Exhibition!

About Rania's Alchemical Vessel: Fi[b]re of Rotation: The alchemical symbol of a circle with a triangle inside represents 'Fire of Rotation.' The fiber pieces are from elements that formed a part of the creation of her recent solo show. This piece is about fire within, and transforming yourself and others through artwork.
