daytime wheel theft from car on the unit block of Adams Street NW

See this 05-05-2014 message from a resident on the unit block of Adams Street NW:

Between 11 am and 2:30 pm today (Monday May 5, 2014), someone stole one tire off my car on the unit block of Adams St NW.  To do this, they must have crouched in the roadway with their back to traffic, and with an electronic tool removed very quickly my relatively new Goodyear P135 tire right off the car -- they took the hub cap and 5 lug nuts as well, rendering the spare tire useless. This left a gaping hole and, catch this, the thief (thieves?) propped up the car on a cinderblock. Thanks, thieves, for not damaging the axle!

What's so obnoxious about this is that on this block there are a lot of people home all day, either with kids, semi-retired, retired and we all keep an eye out, and yet none of us saw anything!  I was in the basement doing laundry. Two families across the street saw my car whole about 11 am when they went shopping.  Others were in their yards.  Yet when I went to move the car across the road to avoid tomorrow's street-sweeping ticketing, my car was  a three-wheeled paperweight!  In fact, I almost thought I was dreaming or it was a joke at first and someone would spring out and say "ha ha."  But no. Wheel gone, toothless car!

The theft ("Theft II From Auto")  has been reported to the police and all the aggro with insurance and repair shop is underway, but what this says is that thieves around here work quickly, count on us not seeing them, and are bold. So if you see anything odd -- like someone who "appears" to be 'repairing a car,' 'doing yard work', or whatever "phony" activity these clever thieves cook up -- maybe check it out, call the police etc. Could be your tire -- or house -- next!

And, if you saw anything odd (like a guy rolling a big tire down the street with a car tool in hand), or if you know someone trying to sell you a used good tire, please contact me (mugsim@aol.com).  Thanks.
