Dakota is light brown with black/grey snout and ears with white paws.  She is mid-sized, with a long body and short legs.  She has a calm demeanor and is not aggressive.  She is wearing a white flea collar and a silver chain collar with tags. Reward!

After decades of wrangling, the District has big plans for developing this historic 25 acre site.
                                               

The 25 acre field with rows of strange brick silos on North Capitol Street has long intrigued passersby. Is it home to a super secret bunker? An alien landing ground? Missile silos? It's actually a historic sand filtration plant that was in use until 1985.  After decades of wrangling, the District has big plans for developing the site. The final mix of park, offices and shops is being decided on now, and neighbors, preservationists and developers are all weighing in.

group of 20-something people "up to no good" in the alleys around unit blocks of U, North Capitol & V NW

This past Sunday [6-10-2012] in the middle of the day, there was a large group of people standing in the alley of the 2000 block of North Capitol NW.  After pulling into my parking and getting out of my car, one of them threw a rock as soon as I was out of their field of view (they were down the alley a few houses away and my retaining wall is pretty high).  The rock hit my car door rather hard and chipped the paint.  Nonetheless because they could not see where I was at that point, I chose not to confront them because quite frankly, there were simply too many to potentially fight.  Instead I went into my yard and called the police.  The police arrived and went back to the alley to talk to the group.  As I could not identify the thrower or know for sure whether they were throwing the rock at my car or me (for legal purposes it matters because one is assault and the other is not), I did not go with the police so I do not know the outcome.  Nonetheless, here is what I want everyone to know: The police were familiar with this group and not one of them is a teen. They are all in their early 20s and illegally street gamble quite a bit.  The police also suspect them of other illegal activity in the area.  The only thing that caught my eye about them before the rock was that at least one of them was big—around 6`5 and wearing a white tank top.  They`ve been frequenting the unit blocks of V, North Cap and U Street—particularly in the alleys.  At least several members of this group are up to no good.  

                                                                                           

So if you see them be aware—as you might get a rock thrown like a fast ball for no other reason than your existence.

D.C.has three of America`s most-whitened Zip codes

Via Michael J. Petrilli at the Fordham Institute`s Flypaper education blog comes a list of the 25 U.S. Zip codes which saw the greatest gain in white population share from 2000 to 2010.

In the absence of 2010 economic data, which is yet to be released, Petrilli uses the relative change in white population to gauge the impact of gentrification.

Three of the top 25 are in D.C. — only Brooklyn, N.Y., with four Zips, is more represented on the list. The particular D.C. Zip codes identified will come as little surprise to city denizens:

No. 10: 20001 — Shaw/Bloomingale/LeDroit Park/Truxton Circle/Pleasant Plains — 5.6 percent non-Hispanic white in 2000 to 32.8 percent in 2010.

 

No. 14: 20010 — Mount Pleasant/Columbia Heights/Park View — 22 percent non-Hispanic white in 2000 to 46.7 percent in 2010.

No. 19: 20005 — Logan Circle/Downtown — 47.3 percent non-Hispanic white in 2000 to 68.4 percent in 2010.

Topping the list are a several unexpected locales — Columbia, S.C., Chattanooga, Tenn., and Roanoke, Va. Petrilli writes that gentrification ``is not a phenomenon limited to a few of our great coastal cities. These gentrifying neighborhoods are literally all over the map.``

For the past several years I`ve been obsessed with the issue of gentrification. Mostly that`s because of a book I`ve been writing about diverse public schools. What`s clear is that gentrification—for all of its downsides—is providing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to integrate some of our schools—at least if we don`t let it go to waste.

So I was curious: Which communities in the U.S. are witnessing the greatest amount of gentrification? I started poking around Census Bureau data (with the assistance of some colleagues and the Census Bureau`s excellent help line) and here`s what I found. I looked at zip codes (which isn`t perfect, because boundaries can change) and places with a large increase in the white share of the population (which isn`t perfect, because you`d really want to look at changes in income levels, but those data aren`t available yet for 2010). With those caveats in mind, take a look:

[Bloomngdale's zip code 20001 is #10 on the list – with a 27.2% change in white share of population between 2000 and 2010.]

  

I`m not an expert on gentrification (education policy is my beat) but I was surprised by the list. I expected to see Chicago, Brooklyn, Washington, D.C., and Denver. But Chattanooga? Columbia, SC? Oklahoma City? St. Louis? This is not a phenomenon limited to a few of our great coastal cities. These gentrifying neighborhoods are literally all over the map.

seeking recommendations for a contractor to build out a basement rental apartment

I am looking to have my basement converted into a rental apartment in the coming months.

Any recommendations for general contractors ?

The basement height is presently at 7 feet. I have had one contractor look at it thus far and he wanted to dig down 6 inches in order to install a sump pump.

The basement is an open space with brick walls on all sides and is approximately 850-870 square feet in size.

A bathroom and kitchen would need to be put in as well.
