Greetings Members of ANC’s 5E and 1B, Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park Civic Associations, and Other Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park Residents:

 

On behalf of DC Water, I want to provide you some important information on an upcoming DC Water construction project in your area, our Small Diameter Water Main Replacement Project.

 

As you will see on the attached project information sheet, this project will occur on 2^nd Street, NW, from Florida Avenue to Thomas Street, and also includes the 100 blocks of Seaton Place and S Street. This project is part of our Capital Improvement Program to improve and enhance the District’s water and sewer systems infrastructure, and projects of this type are performed on an ongoing basis throughout the city each year. Benefits of the project include improved water quality and water distribution system reliability, increased water pressure in some areas, and adequate flows throughout the system. This particular project will primarily include the following activities-

                                           

·         Installation of 1500 linear feet of 12-inch water mains

·         Installation of 2000 linear feet of 8-inch water mains

·         Installation of 300 linear feet of 6-inch water mains

·         Replacement of service lines (lead and/or other) in public space, as needed

·         Replacement of fire hydrants and valves

 

You will also note that construction on the project is scheduled to start this month and be completed in January.  Specifically, the work will begin on or around September 20, pending issuance of the required permit by DDOT. While we will work diligently to complete the entire project as quickly as possible, the portion of work north of Rhode Island Avenue must be completed by or before November 15, so as not to interfere with construction activities under the First Street Tunnel Project.  Although the Small Diameter Water Main Replacement Project is not part of our First Street Tunnel Project, we are coordinating the activities of both projects so as to minimize impacts to the community to the extent possible.

 

In addition to the attached project information sheet, we will also be hand delivering copies door-to-door throughout the community beginning today to ensure that all affected residents are made aware of the work. We ask that you please review the information and let us know of any questions, comments or concerns. Further, if you would like a presentation on the Small Diameter Project during an upcoming meeting, please let us know and we would be happy to accommodate.

Zone 5 resident only parking signage erected on the 100 block of Seaton Place NW, north side

A resident on the 100 block of Seaton Place NW, northside, advised me that DDOT just erected new signage on the northside of that block that reserves parking seven days a week 7 am to midnight for Zone 5 sticker displayers.

Following on the identical signage erected on the unit block of R Street NW a while ago.

So patrons of the local businesses should take note.

Hi BFM Fans,

Welcome back!  The market is a wonderful blend of summer and early Fall so you can make everything you want.  Bring your bike so you can get it into shape for long Fall rides at our Free Bike Clinic, run by our friends at The Bike House.

SPECIAL:  Baby Ginger is back for a few week.  Fiberless, barely covered with a wisp of a skin you can rub off, floral and spicy.  Use it raw, stir fry with it, make cocktails and ginger syrup.  Shred the leaves into curries.  Use the stalk as a swizzle stick or a skewer or underneath whatevery you are grilling -- or throw it into a soup or stew for seasoning.  Only 5 or 6 producers grow baby ginger in our region because it is such a pain.  It is a tropical rhizome and can't bear our winters or Springs so you have to bsby it inside a greenhouse until the weather turns hot enough for it.

FIGS: Those brown Turkish figs are delicious stuffed with ricotta.

SALES: look aroud the market -- there are sales every week.  Mt View often puts their cherry tomatoes on sale.  You will find deals on canning tomatoes from Truck Patch, Mt View and Garner.  Garner has been stuffing a bag full of eggplant for just 10 dollars. If you want half or full bushels of fruit, you can often get a great price.

You Can Buy Just One. or two spears.  Number 1 Sons pickle spears are available for that yen you have while you are browsing the market.


REID:  yellow peaches, white peaches, plums, yellow nectarines, apples (Honeycrisp, Gala, McIntosh, Zesta, Earligold, Ginger Gold, Paula Red, Rambo, Mollie’s Delicious), blueberries, blackberries, red raspberries, seedless grapes and heirloom tomatoes.  I bought a bunch of their Heirlooms last week.  They have some very unusual varieties and very tomato-y flavors.

MOUNTAIN VIEW ORGANIC: Besides the ultimate ginger, you will find nutty flavored Zephyr bicolor summer squash, peppers of all hues and heats including those pale Hungarians,  green beans, cherry tomatoes and beautiful small reds, baskets of chard, herbs.. French Fingerlings, Carolas and white Maryland heirloom sweet potatoes  (Hayman). Delicata Squash and Acorns too.

TRUCK PATCH: BROCCOLI has arrived. Yay. Plus a huge selection of heirlooms (firsts and seconds for canning), chard, spinach, the famous baby arugula, mesclun, summer squash in many colors and shapes (think flying saucers, for instance. Lots of Fall Squash peeking out from the stand as well-- acorn and butternut. Beans and lots of okra. Sweet Potatoes.

Now, if you are not a fan, of okra,  I say roast them toasty to banish the slime. Give them a toss in olive oil and throw them on a cookie sheet at 425 degrees until toasted.   Works like a charm.Then sprinkle with salt, a little cumin and a spritz of lime.  Addictive.  (If the okra are large, stew them  instead --or cut them into pieces before roasting)

TP EGG and Meats: Lots of eggs and pastured pork in 30 different cuts including a dozen differnt sausages.  Pastured Chickens, whole and in parts. Turkey parts and ground.

GARNER: A TABLE full of Roma flat beans, green beans and those aforementioned Purslane. Tomatoes (heirlooms, field, cherries), 7 different summer squash, eggplants, melons. Okra.Corn. REd and yellow poatoes. Cucumbers. Candy sweet onions. Mint.


KESWICK: Yes, the yogurt is superb -- and no, it is not Greek yogurt but you can drain it a bit and it will turn into the best Greek yogurt you have had.  Quark is what regular Cream Cheese aspires to be, and without the additives.  Plain or with chives.  Pimento Cheese because Mark is a Southern boy.  Many flavored of fetas to go with your cucumbers and tomatoes.  15 different aged raw milk cheeses.

PANORAMA: Emmanuel and Damien have your back whether you want French baguettes and croissants or whole wheat/rye/sourdough/pumpernickel/ multigrain loaves.  Damien loves his French breakfast pastries...All the breads freeze very well so you can have bread all week.

PAINTED HAND: Sandy has her liver bits for our Bloomingdogs and primal cuts of goat for us.  Goat, rose veal, eggs, chickens.  Did you go to her annual Labor Day goat roast Monday?

WHISKED: Jenna was featured in the Food Section of the POST Wednesday -- did you see? http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/union-kitchen-gives-small-food-businesses-a-space-to-call-their-own/2013/09/04/6c8ea67c-117d-11e3-b4cb-fd7ce041d814_story.html?tid=gog_ent_article_grid.  Pies this week:  Apple Blackberry, Nectarine Ginger, Caramelized  Onion and Goat Cheese Quiche and teh spicy, cheesy Corn Cheddar and Jalapeno.   Pretzel Cowboy Cookies, Salty Oats too.  Ask about the Vegan crusts.

NUMBER 1 SONS: Dilly beans, pickled garlic, blonde pickles, Acalpulco kraut (think: the best cortido and would be just what you need on your tacos, just in case you have not tried it  yet.)  I bought Kicky Koshers today after finishing off a tall container of Dills last week with Jeff.  This is the real deal, whether you are looking for traditionally brined NY deli pickles or Kimchi or Krauts.  And while I can't eat just one they do sell 2 spears for a dollar if you need a hit while you are shopping.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is evaluating service changes for several of its bus routes and will hold six public hearings between September 16 and 19. For each location, an Open House period will begin at 6:00 p.m., and the formal Public Hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m. All service change proposals in the docket are eligible for comment at any of the six hearing locations.

Reminder: Public Input Sought on Pepco’s Rate Application

 

The Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia (Commission) seeks input on the rate application submitted by the Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) requesting authority to increase existing distribution service rates and charges for electric service in the District of Columbia. Pepco seeks a revenue rate increase of $51.75 million. Pepco is the sole distributor of electric power to homes and businesses in the District; hence the Commission will set Pepco’s distribution service rates in this rate case and not the cost of electricity itself.

 

The Commission will convene four (4) community hearings at the following locations on the specified dates:
