Dear Mid City East Advisory Committee,

 

I am pleased to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Project Manager,  for the Mid City East Small Area Plan. I am happy to join project team member, Deborah Crain as we settle into this new transition. To date, this project has moved along seamlessly in part because of  Joyce’s stewardship, the leadership of this Advisory Committee and because of the extraordinary team of consultants, government agencies and advisors. I am prepared to keep the momentum and positive energy flowing as we enter into the final stages of the planning process. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like additional information about where we are in the process.

 

Now, some important updates……… the Office of Planning and District Department of Transportation have exciting news to report!

 

We will be  presenting  the Mid City East Small Area Plan draft recommendations to the public on  Thursday, September 26, 2013, from 6:30pm-8:30pm at the McKinley Technology Educational Campus in their Auditorium. This will be an open house and presentation of the Office of Planning and DDOT’s draft recommendations informed by extensive analysis and community feedback during the planning process. We hope you can join us for this event!

 

Prior to the meeting, you will receive a copy of the draft recommendations, and we will be scheduling an advisory committee meeting in October to get your feedback.

 

Finally, I have attached a public notice flyer for the September 26th meeting. We would appreciate it if you could disseminate the flyer amongst your constituents, partners and stakeholders. Thank you so much for your assistance and continued support on this effort.  We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 26, 2013.

Friends of McMillan Park: McMillan Park town hall meeting -- Saturday, 09-14-2013

Friends of McMillan Park cordially invites all supporters, neighbors, District residents, and citizens of planet Earth curious or concerned about the past and future of historic McMillan Park to attend a Town Hall Meeting this Saturday, September 14th, from 3-5 pm, in Saint Martin's Pioneer Room, 1908 North Capitol St. NW (North Capitol and T NW, enter on T St.)  Speakers will address McMillan Park's rich history and explain both the Gray Administration's proposal for the site and creative alternatives. 

 

The event will also include a focused discussion of community concerns and provide a list of ways that you can help. Our generous local sponsors are providing pizza, pasta, beer, and soft drinks for your enjoyment. We will also have some fun McMillan Park t-shirts, bumper stickers, and buttons for sale to support the cause.

Please note that the next public tour of McMillan Park, originally planned for this Saturday,
has been postponed until later this fall. We are continuing our close collaboration with the 

Army Corps of Engineers to host the upcoming tour of the Reservoir side of the Park, 

including some of its well-maintained underground filtration cells. We will keep everyone 

posted about this rare opportunity to experience one of our city's finest hidden treasures.

I am surprised that there was no mention of the loud party on the unit block of Seaton Place NW that was ended by MPD on Saturday night around 11:00 p.m.  There was loud music and rowdy party goers, fights ensued and arrests were made.  Some neighbors received a nice note from HU students informing them of the impending party and the hours of duration.  It was shocking how loud the party was and how many people were in the house and backyard.  This event was not a welcome sight.  We are a neighborhood and some decorum is needed.  We all need to respect each other and the loud music and rowdy activities were nowhere near respectful.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Eckington resident Alex Underwood to be sworn in as the new ANC 5E03 commissioner next week at the ANC 5E meeting

I attended this evening's Eckington Civic Association. 

ANC 5E Commissioner Sylvia Pinkney mentioned that Eckington resident Alex Underwood would be sworn in at next week's ANC 5E meeting as ANC 5E's newest commissioner -- for single member district ANC 5E03 -- replacing Tim Clark.

Commissioner Pinkney noted that no one other than Alex Underwood submitted their names or gathered signatures for the vacant ANC 5E03 position.

Wells Stresses McMillan Alternatives in Meeting with Advocates

Councilmember Tommy Wells met last Tuesday morning with Friends of McMillan Park and stressed historic preservation, sustainability, education, and green space as important goals for McMillan Park’s future.  Wells’ position contrasts with the Gray Administration’s plans for intensive development, plans that would bring high-rise buildings, gridlock traffic, and destruction of most of the historic park.  Wells said that he wants to help FOM achieve its goals of preserving, restoring, and transforming McMillan Park, adding that good planning starts with good architecture, rather than with developers.

 

“It is important that we develop the McMillan site with the input and support of the community and in a manner that increases the ability of residents to live, work, and raise their families here,” said Councilmember Wells.

 

In the meeting with members of FOM, Wells remarked that since DMPED now prohibits the popular community-sponsored tours of McMillan Park, it is very difficult to educate residents and others about why the site should be saved.  He offered to visit the site with relevant Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners to gain first-hand experience of the Park's historic vistas and majestic underground caverns.   

 

“We welcome Councilmember Wells’ commitment to a new path for McMillan Park—one that preserves our national treasure as a community park for the immediate neighbors, Wards 1 and 5, and the District as a whole,” said Tony Norman, Chairman of ANC 1B and the McMillan Park Committee, a close ally of the Friends. “We look forward to the tour that Wells has proposed as a first step to re-opening McMillan Park and the associated planning processes.”

 

Wells noted his opposition to constructing high-rise buildings at McMillan Park, in part because of the intense traffic that they would generate and the resultant negative impact on the walkability of the surrounding neighborhoods.  Wells also remarked that he opposes raising the federal height limit for development in the District as there are still areas of the city open for growth and construction not yet being utilized.

 

Friends of McMillan Park plans to meet with the other mayoral candidates, as well as contenders for the DC Council.
