reported power surges on the unit block of R Street NW back in mid-October 2015

See this tardy post from Monday, 10-19-2015 from a resident on the unit block of R Street NW:

I live on the unit block of R St NW, where there's been a lot of Pepco work on the street (and signs indicate it will continue into December). The other day my doorbell, which was brand new, suddenly stopped working. Today, my basement tenant was watching TV when the power went out. It quickly came back on, but the TV was blown out. 
  

I'm suspicious that surges related to the Pepco work is to blame. Anyone else experiencing this kind of thing?

Tell the Council to Reconsider McMillan
We can't get public land back once it's given to a developer, and it's tough to recreate green space once it's paved over.  So why rush the development of the 25-acre McMillan Park now, especially since the DC Auditor recently revealed that the deal did not have the level of transparency and competitive bidding required by DC law? 

There are thousands of DC residents who oppose the current development plan for McMillan.  The Mayor wants the Council to extend the time period for the disposition of the land - but we agree with Save McMillan Park that they should vote "No" on the extension and reconsider this deal.  Please send a quick letter to the Council letting them know you agree too.

Is it too late for McMillan?

On Monday, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson is expected to move to a council vote a mayor’s resolution to extend a land agreement on the historic McMillan Sand Filtration Site. The 2-million-square-foot, mixed-use project planned for the 25-acre site, where the city cleansed its drinking water during the 20th century, is “one of the most significant, vigorously discussed projects in the District,” according to the city’s co-developer, Vision McMillan Partners.
That is partly true. Since 1987, when the city purchased the Ward 5 parcel just off North Capitol Street from the Army Corps of Engineers for $9.3 million, a debate has raged about whether to develop it for maximum economic gain or preserve it as a park with an emphasis on green space.
Such polarized rhetoric is misleading, and has obscured issues about how the city does business, a central theme of Mayor Muriel E. Bowser’s (D) “Fresh Start” campaign. In less than a year, Bowser has triggered alarms by undoing a development deal negotiated by her predecessors at the historic Franklin School and by allowing her advisers to form a super PAC fueled by unlimited donations from companies that do business with the District.
Both missteps are characteristic of a culture that in recent years has damaged careers, sent elected officials to prison and embarrassed the District. Now, her handling of McMillan threatens not only to perpetuate a toxic era in local politics but to stick the District with a town center of little distinction that will pave over an iconic site engineered and designed by Post-Civil War visionaries Allen Hazen and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.

A look at some largely ignored history is in order.

It would seem that despite our great turnout and despite the Auditor's letter, the Council Chairman, Phil Mendelson wasn't phased in his push to dispose of our land.  Although, McMillan is far from being a 'Done Deal' especially because they want to extend the disposition of our public land to 5-years out!

We want to write letters and gather at the Council to demand they listen to DC's Auditor and the people!

We've been busy busy busy and have a couple of events left in 2015. Save the dates:
  • Sunday, November 8: Chili party at Showtime Bar. The chili cookbook and mixtape to benefit Bread for the City is done! From 4-7 pm, you can come eat Brendan Polmer's NOLA-style red beans and rice, Amanda Huron's cheesy biscuits, half smoke chili by yours truly, and other goodies. And buy the book and tape, of course. 


  • Tuesday, November 10: We're going on Radio CPR! We're gonna drop some tunes on the Dissonance show, 0% of which will be by straight white dudes.
  • Saturday, November 14: Black Cat Backstage + Chrissy's goodbye party. As you've probably heard, Chrissy got a superhero job in New York and starts November 16, so this will be her last show with Jack on Fire. Come watch us play the old hits, some new ones, and the Julie Ruin's "Oh Come On" one last time. It'll be emotional. Also I'm bringing some trays of Noodles & Company, so there's that.
  • Friday, December 4: The new album, We Sass You Shake Yr Ass, drops. I'll probably spam you again when this happens but slutever.

    • And at that point, I'll probably take a nap for a month or two.
