New Classes Starting In September at The Unified Scene Theater: Intro To Improv Comedy and Storytelling for Performance!

The Unified Scene Theater has just announced their latest round of classes for September and October, featuring two that are ideal for the novice performer, with no experience necessary or required. Read on...

Our Next Introduction To Improvisational Comedy Begins Monday, September 11th!

Our next seven-week Introduction to Improv Comedy Class Improv Class will be held on Mondays, 7:00 p.m. – 9 p.m., September 11th through Monday, October 23rd (six weeks of instruction, with a graduation show in week seven, on Monday, October 23rd). We'll focus on and take a deeper dive into some of the things that inform great (and hilarious) improv scenes: agreement, commitment, energy,  and context through exercises and games that demonstrate the fundamental principles behind this fun and exciting art form. Again, no experience necessary.

More info on our website. Ready to register? Go here.

Our next Storytelling for Performance Class Begins on Wednesday, September 13th!

The Unified Scene Theater's next Storytelling for Performance Class begins on Wednesday, September 13th and goes through Wednesday, October 11th, from 7-9 p.m. (four weeks of instruction, with a graduation show in week 5, on the evening of October 11th). In this class, you'll learn everything from how to gather information for a story, shape into a recognizable narrative arc, and then strategies for telling it in public. We take you from having an unshaped story idea to having a performance-ready story to share in a few short weeks. Also: our graduation show will be held at Big Bear Cafe, our neighbors only a few blocks away.

More info on our website. Ready to register? Go here.

Daniel Wolkoff: Weigh in to defeat VMP's "National Harbor" for Bloomingdale

From: WARD5@yahoogroups.com [mailto:WARD5@yahoogroups.com]
Sent: Thursday, September 7, 2017 1:59 AM
To: Ward 5
Cc: Daniel Wolkoff
Subject: [WARD5] Weigh in to defeat Vision McMillan Partners "National Harbor" in Bloomingdale

Mayor’s Agent hearing will take place on September 11, beginning at 9am and running until about 5:30pm. If necessary a continuation hearing will be held on September 18. The hearing will take place at 441 4th Street NW, Room 220 South and is open to the public (you will need ID to get through security).

If you wish to submit written testimony please email it to me by Friday, September 8 at 4pm.

Please say "support" or "oppose" on your letter to the Mayor's Agent determining how to divide up our public land for massive over urbanization.

More information on the proceedings can be found here: https://planning.dc.gov/node/ 1211347

The public is invited to submit testimony in "opposition" or "support" for the McMillan Re-development plan by Conglomerate VMP, Vision McMillan Partners. Just about every big developer is in on this one. EYA, Jair Lynch and Trammel Crow are the main partners with the DC govt.

DMPED is a partner and in clear conflict of interest,  at the same time is evaluater and regulator of it's own business deal

A "National Harbor" in historic Bloomingdale, this development is bigger, "The Monstrosity on Michigan Avenue".

The plan includes 50 buildings, 700 condos and rentals, and two mammoth medical office towers of 1million sq ft each. Medical offices are speculative real estate right on top of Washington Hospital Center and 5 other medical facilities, while East of the River  goes wanting for medical facilities, a violation of the Comprehensive Plan.

The developers TIS (Traffic Impact Study) predicts 31,000 vehicle trips per day on congested N. Capitol and 24,000 mass transit users with no metro closer than 1 mile, requiring 600 shuttles per day. The plan has 2900 parking spaces. Do you support this on our public green space?

McMillan Coalition for Sustainable Agriculture hopes Ward 5 residents will send in their comments with "oppose" at the top. We need recreation space, green space to reduce the "urban heat island effect", a Glen Echo of classes and activities for our families, a DC Wolf Trap outdoor concert stage, and Urban  agriculture in the 20 acres of preserved underground filtration cells can produce millions of pounds of fresh food, careers, and we can train our youth and under employed in building trades restoring our historic site. We need a DC Central Park to offer a unified meeting place for the community cohesion that is so sorely missing.

The developers and Deputy Mayor hired Jamie Fontaine PR firm to "neutralize  opposition", a violation of the First Amendment.

A recent article in the Intowner describes the "muck" this deal has sunk into.....

Bowser and PR Firm Fontaine lied "it was never a park", The High Line in NY was never a park, it was an elevated Railroad. They had the foresight to save it, and a fabulous success for NY.

Bloomngdale elder Ms.Ella relates her childhood spent in the PARK, the children called McMillan "our beach".

To ram the development down our throats the DC govt. hired Jamie Fontaine PR firm to "neutralize opposition", a violation of the Constitutional right to "petition the govt. for redress of grievances".

community struggle to Save McMillan Park, preserving the ENTIRE "GREAT PLACE", Olmsted designed surface-park and existing 20 acres underground, creates the exciting potential for Sustainable large scale "indoor agriculture", numerous adaptive re-use that is allowed with Historic Preservation and building real careers, parks are economic development.

Different than Kojo and Roger K. Lewis  model.

Friends of McMillan Park: Mayor's Agent remand hearings continue this Monday, 09-11-2017

From: HistoricWashington@yahoogroups.com [mailto:HistoricWashington@yahoogroups.com]
Sent: Tuesday, September 5, 2017 11:56 AM
To: HistoricWashington@yahoogroups.com
Subject: [HistoricWashington] Mayor`s Agent McMillan Remand Hearings Continue Monday

Here follows the full announcement from Friends of McMillan Park (FOMP) about upcoming deliberations being held to comply with the D.C. Court of Appeals's vacate and remand of Mayor's Agent and Zoning decisions on the development plan for McMillan Sand Filtration Site and Park.

Andrea Rosen

The Mayor's Agent for Historic Preservation held a first hearing on the remand of the McMillan case from the D.C. Court of Appeals on July 14th, but the hearing did not conclude, so he has scheduled an additional hearing for 9 am on Monday, September 11, at 441 Fourth Street NW, room 220 South (same room Zoning hearings are held in).

The July 14 hearing got only part way through cross-examination of the DMPED/VMP [Vision McMillan Partners] witnesses, so this is where the hearing will continue on September 11. Then FOMP will present its case; there will be cross-examination of FOMP witnesses; and then organizations and the public may testify, though this may be late in the day (or possibly on the scheduled continuation date of September 18 if this hearing, too, runs over time).

The Mayor's Agent assured us he will allow the public to testify, on the condition that persons testifying address the specific questions in the court remand. It has been suggested that persons may submit written testimony in opposition to, or in support of, the DMPED/VMP project (FOMP is of course in opposition) by 4 pm on Friday, September 8, via e-mail to julianna.jackson@ dc.gov (an HPO staffer).

In any written testimony, be sure to specify whether your testimony is in support of, or in opposition to, the DMPED/VMP project, keep it brief, and identify which of the remand questions you are addressing in your remarks. (See the specific questions the Mayor's Agent must consider at this hearing at: https://repository.library.georgetown.edu/handle/10822/1043014)

The Zoning Commission has decided to hold another meeting, a decision meeting, on Thursday, September 14 at 7 pm (in the usual Zoning hearing room) to "explore more exhaustively whether or not the Commission has considered the proposed height and density of the medical center." FOMP will of course be present. It is unlikely that there will be any opportunity for the public to speak at this meeting. This special meeting has been called to ask DMPED/VMP to address certain specific questions about the height/density of the medical buildings proposed for the project. The public is welcome to witness the proceedings, in person or via webcast (see the Zoning Commission web page for details on how to do that).

Presumably the Mayor's Agent and Zoning will write orders at the conclusion of their respective hearings and meetings, which will be presented to the D.C. Court of Appeals, but we cannot know when these orders will come out as the hearings themselves have not yet concluded.

Developers to convert two Howard dorms to apartments

Washington Business Journal

Howard University has turned to Urban Investment Partners and Neighborhood Development Corp. to develop two former Howard residence halls into apartments.

The two D.C. developers have signed a 99-year lease with the university for Carver Hall, 211 Elm St. NW, and Slowe Hall, 1919 Third St. NW, both unused dorms dating to the 1940s.

The $50 million renovation projects will deliver 162 units market-rate units, and the developers have agreed to offer scholarships and internships to Howard students. The university says it is exempt from providing units to lower-income residents because it is not adding units.

The university put Carver and Slowe halls out for bid earlier this year when it offered seven properties omitted from its campus plan to the development community. With the Shaw and LeDroit Park neighborhoods rapidly developing, obsolete buildings and parking lots are a moneymaking opportunity for the school.
