View this email in your browser Neighbors, The holiday season is now in full swing and we naturally focus much of what we do this time of year on children. So I'd like to take this opportunity to share some inspiring stories of young people from around Ward 5. A young man in Woodridge, Jamar Lee, has become active in the youth empowerment program with The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. His most recent project is to raise funds to purchase socks for underprivileged youth. Last Saturday, he raised enough from neighbors to purchase 224 pairs of socks that will help children ages 3-11 this winter season. Sasha Ariel Alston is a graduate of McKinley Tech High School and is currently attending college today, however she has already written and published a children's book, Sasha Savvy Loves to Code. In August, Sarah-Marie Ramson of Brookland traveled to North Carolina to compete in the 2017 U.S. Kids World Golf Championship. When she wanted to represent D.C. by bringing a flag, I was proud to loan her mine. Finally, the Ward 5 Warriors Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee Football Team won the Eastern Regional Championship. These 10 and 11 year olds all maintain at least a 3.0 GPA (the team average is over 3.5!) and are currently in Orlando, Florida competing in the national championship tournament. These young people are an inspiration and part of what makes Ward 5 such a great community. The legislation makes it unlawful in the District of Columbia to advertise a false deadline when an offer is open-ended, or to create a false sense of urgency by misusing terms such as “Final Notice,” “Urgent,” or “Time Sensitive.” These advertisements are often sent by companies seeking to mislead residents to sell their property below market value. Ward 5 Holiday Party - December 13 Join Councilmember McDuffie and the Ward 5 community to come together to celebrate the holiday season. Please celebrate the season of giving by bringing a new, unwrapped toy for our annual toy drive benefiting children in our community. Kenyan in the Community My School DC EdFEST - December 9 EdFEST 2017 is the District’s annual citywide public school fair. Come and explore the city’s many public school options (PK3-12) for your child. Representatives from more than 200 D.C. Public Schools and public charter schools will showcase their programs. With the launch of the My School DC common lottery application on December 11, 2017 for the 2018-19 school year, EdFEST is the perfect opportunity to ask questions about schools and their services and programs from those who know first-hand. EdFEST will also have many free health screenings, sports activities, story time and more, so bring the whole family! Admission and parking are free. Interpretation in American Sign Language, Spanish, Amharic, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and French are available throughout the day. Commission on Fathers, Men, and Boys Celebration in Brookland - December 15 On December 15th, the Commission on Fathers, Men, and Boys (CFMB) will celebrate two years of engaging the community with a social mixer, toy giveaway, and recognition of our commissioners, city leaders, and partners. The theme will be "The Champs Are Here," a positive affirmation from the late, great Muhammad Ali to recognize DC champions who work tirelessly to create pathways to prosperity and success for fathers, men, and boys of the District of Columbia. Arrest Made in a Homicide: 1700 Block of North Capitol Street, Northeast

(Washington, DC)  – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced an arrest has been made in a fatal stabbing that occurred in the 1700 block of North Capitol Street, Northeast, on Saturday, September 23, 2017.

At approximately 11:20 pm, members of the Fifth District responded to the listed location for the report of a man down. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, suffering from a stab wound. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital.

On Monday, September 25, 2017, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent has been identified as 46 year-old Andrew Alphonzo Cook, III, of Northeast, DC.

On Monday, December 4, 2017, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 42 year-old Gregory Williams of Northwest, DC, and charged him with First Degree Murder while Armed.

Suspect Sought in a Burglary Two Offense:

1700 Block of First Street, Northwest

(Washington, DC) – Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fifth District seek the public's assistance in identifying a person of interest in reference to a Burglary Two offense which occurred in the 1700 block of First Street, Northwest, on Saturday, November 25, 2017.

At approximately 1:04 am, the suspect gained entry to an establishment at the listed location. Once inside, the suspect took merchandise then fled the scene.

Anyone who has information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099.  Additionally, information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.  Crime Solvers of Washington, DC currently offers a reward of up to $1,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible for a crime committed in the District of Columbia.

The District continues to see sky-high revenue from its growing network of speed and red-light cameras — hitting about $194.1 million in fiscal 2017.

The revenue is a small but significant increase from the $190 million these cameras brought in in fiscal 2016 and reflects a huge leap from about $117 million in fiscal 2015.
