one week from today: St. Baldrick's headshaving event at Boundary Stone -- to raise funds to help fight childhood cancer

We are looking for shavees and donations for our annual St. Baldrick’s Day head shaving event at Boundary Stone. This is our 6th annual event at the pub and have thus far raised $329,053 for children’s cancer research! • Childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer of kids in the U.S.
• Current childhood cancer research is significantly underfunded. Of the U.S. federal funding for cancer research, only 4% is solely dedicated to childhood cancers.
• St. Baldrick’s is the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants.
• Since 2005, St. Baldrick's has committed more than $253 million to lifesaving research. Grants include training the next generation of researchers, supporting innovative research and helping institutions treat more children in clinical trials.

Learn how to use herbs medicinally in our upcoming Home Apothecary Program.

This 8-month herbal medicine program from April to November is a hands-on introduction to herbalism. Meeting once per month, participants will tend a garden together, explore the basic concepts of herbalism, and make lots of herbal preparations to bring home and to share with the Common Good community. The home apothecary program offers a unique opportunity to learn about using herbs while working directly with the plants and developing connection to the land and ecosystem we call home. This program will be taught by Holly Poole-Kavana of Little Red Bird Botanicals.

HPO staff report for the 1600 North Capitol Street NW development project issued: "find the concept generally compatible with the character of the Bloomingdale Historic District"

The DC Historic Preservation Office (HPO) has issued its staff report for 1600 North Capitol Street NW -- the Joe Mamo lot at North Capitol Street NW and Florida Avenue NW.

Note that the Bloomingdale Civic Association voted against the proposed building design.  And note that ANC5E subsequently went against the will of the BCA's vote and voted for the proposed building design.

The HPO staff report finds the concept generally compatible with the character of the Bloomingdale Historic District.  

Next step: presentation at the DC Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB).
