New Zoning Amendments Could Result in Artist Performances and More Homes in DC’s Alleys

A proposed zoning amendment could expand what is possible in DC's alleys.

The Office of Planning (OP) has submitted a text amendment to the Zoning Commission recommending a slate of edits which would ostensibly make alley dwellings by-right on more city lots. The amendments would also give artists with alley studios more freedom in using the public space, permitting the location to host up to five shows or performances annually. The zoning code does not currently have any rules pertaining to alley studio performances.

The proposed edits include:

• Amending language that currently allows alley dwelling heights up to 40 feet by special exception in the RF-1 zone, instead requiring a variance with a higher burden of proof.

The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington handed out its 37th annual RAMMY awards Sunday, naming Kyle Bailey of The Salt Line as chef of the year and The Source by Wolfgang Puck as top formal fine dining restaurant. 

                

Roughly 100 nominees were culled to 30 winners, announced during the annual gala at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. 

                

The awards honor the region’s restaurant industry, specifically restaurants that are members of the association in categories focused on food and beverage, service and more. Any RAMW member who met all category requirements was eligible for nomination. Food producers and others who serve the restaurant industry are also honored.

Big Bear’s new Chef, Isaiah Ruffin, is hosting a 3 course tasting dinner on Tuesday (7/30/2019) at 7pm with the brewers of 3 Stars Brewery.

The dinner will be a coursed, local ingredient, family-style dinner with an emphasis on seafood served with a beer pairing.

The 1st course will be fried soft-shelled crab with greens cooked in an IPA Sabay. The 1st beer pairing will be a Double IPA (the name has yet to be released from 3-Stars).

The 2nd course will be fish en papilote with summer vegetables. The 2nd beer pairing will be the Hazy Pale Ale.

The 3rd course will be a Cheesecake with a shortbread crust made with early summer peaches. The 3rd beer pairing will be the Peppercorn Saison.

Vegetarian options are available. Gluten free is not an option for this meal, and dairy free is an option but it is not suggested.

View this email in your browser Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project Florida Avenue NW Construction Site June 26, 2019 Greetings residents and businesses. Overnight Delivery of Heavy Equipment  On or about Tuesday, July 9, 2019, DC Water's contractor will deliver a drill rig, which is a large piece of construction equipment, to the Florida Avenue NW Construction Site, located on 3rd Street, NW between Florida Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue, NW. In order to relieve chronic sewer flooding, DC Water is constructing a diversion facility on 3rd Street NW which will include a diversion chamber, a 20-foot diameter drop shaft, and other structures to convey flow from the existing sewer to the Northeast Boundary Tunnel. The drill rig will be used in the construction of the drop shaft. Because of the size of the drill rig, it will be necessary to deliver it during hours when traffic is reduced on Rhode Island Avenue. The estimated time of this delivery will be between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM. The equipment is being moved from its current position at the Rhode Island NE Construction Site to the 3rd Street, NW site. A drill rig like the one in the above photo will be delivered unassembled to the Florida Avenue NW Construction Site.  Residents should be advised they may experience noise from trucks and the removal of the drill rig from a large flatbed vehicle. Assembly of the drill rig will not occur during the overnight hours. The drill rig will be assembled during regular construction hours, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM Monday – Friday. Drop Shaft Secant Pile Work to Begin On or about the same day, July 9, work will begin within the fenced construction site to install secant piles as support for the excavation of the drop shaft. For this work, which is expected to be completed in 12 weeks, 3rd Street, NW will continue to be closed to traffic and sidewalk closures will be in place as well as a pedestrian detour on 3rd Street NW. Pedestrian Detour The crosswalks across 3rd Street at Florida Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue, NW will be reduced in width but will allow for continued and safe pedestrian crossing during construction. The pedestrian detour is indicated by green arrows. The crosswalks at 3rd Street and Florida Avenue, NW and 3rd Street and Rhode Island Avenue, NW will be open. Additional Information People who live or work near the affected locations will notice additional construction equipment and personnel as well as noise associated with construction activities. Commuters and pedestrians will notice road signs and/or flagging personnel directing them safely around the work site. Please slow down, stay calm, and be patient as you approach the work zone. Pedestrians will notice signage for the closed sidewalks reducing access. Follow the pedestrian detour to safely cross 3rd Street, NW. The West Power plant has GSA assigned covenants that give very wide discretion to SHPO and OP. Obviously the Zoning, Comp plan, and even appeals courts are being watered down to move development on Historic sites. These moves all reduce or eliminate the opportunity for community input and access to appeals. Now the developers are still wondering if they can get an even more wide open party, a pig festival in this construction frenzy. They question why the judges in the appeals are Federally appointed and should they decide local DC business?

Sure get rid of the judges next!!!
