FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, March 3, 2015     Media Contacts Reggie Sanders — (202) 437-0809, reggie.sanders@dc.gov Michelle Phipps-Evans — (202) 497-0124, michelle.phipps-evans@dc.gov                              Single-Lane Closures to Occur for Bridge Safety Inspections on North Capitol Street    (Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close single lanes on the District’s road network on Friday, March 6, from 10 am to 3 pm, weather permitting.  These closures will assist DDOT with a series of routine, annual bridge and tunnel safety inspections.     Motorists should anticipate moderate-to-heavy delays due to the closures, which are scheduled to occur on North Capitol Street in the vicinity of Rhode Island Avenue, T Street and New York Avenue in Wards 5 and 6. The right-lane closures are scheduled to occur at the following areas: ·        Northbound North Capitol Street under T Street ·        Northbound North Capitol Street under Rhode Island Avenue ·        Southbound North Capitol Street under New York Avenue ·        Northbound North Capitol Street under New York Avenue    Traffic controls will be in place to warn motorists approaching the areas. Motorists are advised to stay alert while traveling through these locations and to be observant of the inspection personnel.    ###    Visit goDCgo.com for more information on transportation options in the District.

I am Lieutenant Timothy Haselden, PSA 501, Fifth District, Metropolitan Police Department.

     

I want to thank you for bringing your concerns regarding the Thefts from Autos in your neighborhood to my attention.  I have reviewing the reports and statistical information regarding these crimes, and I have developed a plan of action.  The area most affected by this crime pattern is, generally speaking, the triangular area formed by Florida Avenue, Rhode Island Avenue, and North Capitol St NW.  There is no discernable day-of-week or time-of-day pattern at this time.

    

Utilizing the Data Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety (DDACTS) methodology promoted by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), I have tasked an officer that specializes in high profile traffic enforcement to include our area in his regular rounds of targeted traffic enforcement.

    

Additionally, I have partnered with some of the local ANC Commissioners that have ‘new resident packages’ to begin including crime prevention brochures in their handouts.

  

I have requested the Focused Mission Team Leader, Lieutenant Kyle, to consider the possibility of a ‘bait car’ sting operation in the future.

  

Additionally, we recently made a very significant arrest in a series of residential break-ins (Burglaries).  We arrested a juvenile that is responsible for several burglaries.  That case is in the judicial process, and we are voicing our concerns regarding this person in order to proceed in the most aggressive manner possible to prosecute.

      

Also of note, since December, we have arrested 3 other unrelated persons for burglaries, and 1 person responsible for several robberies (muggings).  These persons appear to be habitual criminals in their respective ‘trade-craft’.

   

I apologize that I have been unable to attend recent meetings, but I will be regularly attending as many meetings as possible in the future.  I am available at 202-255-7782 on my personal cellular telephone to answer any concerns and/or questions.

Please be advised that last week’s scheduled arrival of the crane at the First Street Tunnel Thomas Street Work Zone has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 3 (See Attached Map). This change in arrival time is the result of inclement weather and unsafe road conditions.

DC Water and its Contractor, Skanska Jay-Dee will post temporary “NO PARKING” restrictions from 100 to199 on Thomas Street and at the intersection of Second and Thomas Streets, NW. These restrictions will be enforced from 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 3 through 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4.

We apologize for any convenience this may cause you and we appreciate your cooperation. If we are willing to think of ourselves as figures that can be freed from our slumber within the stone, we can empower others and the world itself as the sculptor's chisel and use our lives as a chance to help us reveal the work of art we truly are.
 


This is quite an existence and a big leap from our habits of needing to be impressive, to do it on our own, to already be a finished product. Not everyone is ready to partner with you so you can become the person you've always wanted to be, the one you know is inside looking to come out. Creating relationships meant for our liberation, committing to chipping away our rough edges in service of our freedom, this is what we do together at The Relationship Circle, but it's available elsewhere, too. Tonight, we'll look at the possibility, what we'd make out of relationships that were designed to help us emerge into our greatness and how we'd go about creating them.

About this event: 

The Relationship Circle is about creating a community of mindful practice in the area of interpersonal relationships.  We endeavor to use our relationships themselves meditatively, as an avenue for personal transformation as well as creating more love, happiness, success and well-being in our lives.  We use self-inquiry to discover how we are the root of our experience and through an empathetic and powerful process, identify patterns and create new pathways for communication, action and relating to ourselves.  This can be a tremendously healing and empowering process.  For over three years, The Relationship Circle has supported people through finding new romantic relationships, creating success in their work and discovering a sense of wholeness that they experience in their everyday lives.

Tonight, we'll do some super-power training together on the orientation that can add so much to both aspects.  Looking at how our relationships are going as a cue for what we can learn about ourselves.  What gifts are available to us in how our relationships go? 

This is no simple skill.  Many of us have resistance (me included!) and rightly so.  We've encountered people and circumstances that gave us a mentality that they were the problem.  This training in no way makes a judgment on who is the problem.  It's just a skill that can help you see things in a very productive way, to examine, love and perhaps drop the ways we are being that may not be contributing to the lives we want to live.  We learned many habits for the sake of safety, but those habits are rarely what it takes to thrive. 

The best word I can use to describe this is humbling.  It's humbling work.  It's the kind of humbling that we can be extraordinarily grateful for, because it releases us from results we never wanted in the first place, it empowers us in our own lives and it brings more love, acceptance and success on our terms.

I'm excited to share this conversation with you.

Bloomingdale Cooperative Playschool Teacher Position

The Bloomingdale Cooperative Playschool is looking for a part-time substitute teacher for our children aged two to four years old.  The position is for approximately 4 weeks during April and May.

Purpose: To provide a safe, secure, developmentally appropriate, fun learning environment for toddlers and preschool aged children.

Scope: The teacher will be the cornerstone of an effective program to nurture children in their first structured learning environment, working closely with the board of directors and parents to create a program that inspires curiosity, secure relationship building, and a lifelong love of learning. The position will begin mid April and run for 4 weeks, part-time with core classroom hours of 8:30am - 12:00pm Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Pay is generous and includes non-classroom planning time.  Work environment is very supportive and friendly.

Responsibilities:

Respect each child and model ongoing respect for all children and their work;

Design student-centered, developmentally appropriate loosely structured curriculum plans;

Develop culturally appropriate and diverse programs and activities;

Ensure classroom materials and environment are clean, well-maintained, and safe;

Observe and engage with children to support their natural tendency to learn;

Communicate frequently with board/parents about program needs, problems, or ideas;

Assign tasks to duty parents to help you in your lead teaching role

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Candidates must be committed to a playschool curriculum approach, have experience working with young children, and possess strong classroom management skills. In addition we give preference to candidates who have the following educational qualifications: BA in early childhood ed. or related field OR CDA plus lead teaching experience. Background check required.

Training in Montessori or RIE Education is preferred but not mandatory. The successful candidate will have a love of teaching and inspiring young minds, and will show patience, kindness, respect, and affection to all students, many of whom will be “first time learners.” Bilingual Spanish-speaking candidates a plus!

Bloomingdale is waiting upon: 1) Mayor's Agent decision on McMillan, 2) DHCD's development team selection on its Florida & Q St NW site

Bloomingdale is awaiting news of two important decisions that will definitely impact the neighborhood.

1) Florida and Q Street NW development team selection

                     
Which of the three development teams for the DHCD-owned site at Florida & Q Street NW, southside, will be identified at the winner?  Still waiting for an announcement from DHCD.

                                   

Will the selected development team be:

• Maedwell Companies?
• Evergreen Urban?
• MiCasa?

We all anxiously await DHCD's announcement.

Eager to hear how the selected team will finance the project, which includes 51% affordable housing.

2)  Mayor's Agent decision on McMillan

The first Mayor's Agent hearing on McMillan was held on Monday, 10-06-2015.  

A continuation hearing on McMillan was held on Monday, 11-03-2015.

At the end of the Mayor's Agent hearing Part 2, the Mayor's Agent indicated that a report would be issued in a couple of month.  Not sure that is exactly what he said, but I seem to recall that it would take a few months to prepare and issue a report.  

So perhaps the Mayor's Agent may issue its report sometime in February?

Or maybe not.

But definitely on Bloomingdale's radar.  

We all anxiously await to see what it says.

the Bloomingdale Civic Association Scholarship Committee is recruiting committee members !

The Bloomingdale Civic Association (BCA) Scholarship Committee is recruiting committee members!  Two to three committee members are needed to help design the scholarship application, review applicants, and get the word out.  The expected time commitment is 5-10 hours total between March and June 2015.

Andrea Rosen & Erin Lynn Fairbanks: Jair Lynch/Senior Housing and McMillan‏

Dear Chairpersons Orange and Bonds and Councilmembers Silverman, Allen, Nadeau, and McDuffie:

It’s a relief to read that DCRA was doing its job when it wrote up eight violations on this subsidized rental in the Paul Lawrence Dunbar apartments on U Street, near 14th Street, NW, although it’s not clear whether the landlord was fined for failing to correct the problems. http://www.wjla.com/articles/2015/02/subsidizing-a-slum-rats-hot-water-shortages-in-d-c-apartments-111874.html#ixzz3T0lbdFZG 

      

According to the ABC/WJLA news report, developer Jair Lynch was paid $43 million to perform renovations in the HUD-subsidized building, which provides affordable housing for seniors.  I guess $43 million wasn’t adequate to stem the infestations, supply reliable heat and hot water, and otherwise provide sanitary and safe housing to the senior residents.

      

Mr. Lynch is one of the three partners in VMP, the sole source developer of McMillan Town Center on the recently surplussed McMillan Sand Filtration Site and Park.  Unfortunately, Mr. Lynch will be the developer of the rental units there, including “affordable” units for moderate-income, workforce, and senior residents.

                                                                      

At the Committee on Housing and Community Development oversight hearing held on  February 26, 2015, on the performance of the Department of Housing and Community Development, one of the people who testified asked quite logically why the city continues to partner with (i.e., subsidize) landlords who do not abide by their responsibilities to tenants.  I hope the appropriate District agency will investigate how Jair Lynch spent the $43 million in public money that he received to renovate the Dunbar apartments.  Furthermore, I hope that someone in government can stop DMPED from committing funds to VMP as long as Mr. Lynch is part of the group. He has already demonstrated his untrustworthiness; why should the city entrust him with development and ownership of additional affordable dwelling units, including units for seniors?
