Greetings ANC Commissioners:

As many of you are aware, for the past 5 consecutive years, DC Water General Manager/C.E.O. George Hawkins has been co-hosting a series of Town Hall Meetings with District Ward Councilmembers each year, with one meeting taking place in each Ward. The primary purpose for these meetings is to generate customer feedback regarding the proposed rate increase for water/sewer services for the upcoming fiscal year-this feedback is shared with our Board of Directors as part of the review process during our Annual Public Rates Hearing, which takes place in late spring. It is now time for the 6th Annual Town Halls to begin!!

In addition to a presentation given by Mr. Hawkins covering the proposed rate increase, there will be information and DC Water staff available to discuss the following topics with residents:

· Water quality
· Construction projects
· Clean Rivers Project
· Catch basins
· Water mains and fire hydrants
· Employment opportunities at DC Water
· Customer Service (Billing)

Each meeting will be from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

We ask that you please mark your respective calendars for the above meeting dates – please don’t miss the opportunity to speak with your water utility about the related concerns or issues you have in your community. We are working to confirm the various meeting locations, and once this has been done we will be providing follow up emails with this additional information, as well as coordinating with Council staff on the creation of meeting flyers that we can provide to you in both electronic and hard copy formats so that you may assist DC Water in spreading the word about the Town Hall Meetings by circulating the flyers throughout your neighborhood. We will also provide up-to-date information regarding the meetings on our website at www.dcwater.com/customercare/rates.cfm, which will include electronic copies of each meeting flyer. Please continue to check that space as well.

I would like to second and support the comments of the neighbor concerned about high-speed drivers careening down the alleys parallel to 1st St. N.W. My dogs and I were very nearly killed by a driver exiting the alley onto U St. She must have been going 25 miles an hour, and she did not slow down at all as she exited the alley and crossed the sidewalk before turning onto U Street. I leapt back and yanked the dogs back in the nick of time before we were hit. The diver looked shocked at what had just nearly happened and waved a sort of apology wave before speeding off.

I agree with the neighbor that speed bumps must be installed until the tunnel project is completed. I think it's the only alternative to avoid someone being maimed or killed. I would happily join in an effort to make this happen.

Dear Tom Lindberg:

I've been on travel and out of the loop for three weeks. I returned only to find that, once again, cars are speeding down the 1st Street NW alley that abuts the Park. And the speeds are truly excessive.

Although police cars are nearby or at U Street there is no enforcement of the 10mph speed restriction.

Action must be taken immediately.

I heartily agree with the resident who wrote regarding the speeding traffic in the alley of 1st St NW -

I have major problem with MD drivers - they are rude, aggressive, ride on your tail, sit on their horn & refuse to let you in on merging traffic lanes. MD drivers should NOT be allowed into DC until they pass a specific driving test & have to post it in their front window.

I think these developments really validate our original opposition to having 1st street opened to through-traffic during construction, as the commuters who pass through our neighborhood on a daily basis show little regard for the peace and well-being of our community. The promised mitigating strategies always look so good on paper, but rarely stand up to human nature.

For anyone who is concerned about the possible neighborhood impacts of the tunneling itself, I'd suggest you read (or don't, if you want to actually sleep at night) about the delays and sinkholes that have plagued Seattle's tunnelling project, which bears many similarities to the 1st Street Tunnel project. (See link below.) The time to get clear answers as to liability and the valuation of our property is now, before major damage is done.

A 03/05/2015 response from a Bryant St NW resident:

The problem is not just isolated to the alleys. Once the cars reach Bryant street, they race down the block at ridiculous speeds for a residential neighborhood. Bryant street is the only cross block in Bloomingdale without speed bumps and we desperately need them installed. The cars, including DOT vehicles, routinely race down Bryant and it has gotten far worse since traffic has been routed through the alleys. As soon as they turn onto Bryant, they often accelerate to at least 40MPH, sometimes faster. Just the other day, a car accelerated towards our family as we were crossing the street and nearly hit us. We would love it if the city would evaluate the block for speed bumps to slow these idiots down before someone gets hurt. There are a lot of children on the area and the traffic routing has made it quite unsafe for them to play near the alleys.

The Complainant reports as as she walking home, she observed an unknown male following her. As she entered her basement apartment she locked her doors behind her. Shortly thereafter she heard a crashing noise and went to investigate and found the unknown male standing in her apartment. Without provocation the unknown male grabbed at her and asked her for money. As the Complainant screamed to occupants upstairs, she was struck about the face with a wooden object and kicked about the body. Hearing the commotion, the occupants in the above apartment decended into the basement apartment, causing the unknown male to exit the apartment without obtaining anything. An area canvass by MPD was conducted without success. Look-out for a Black Male, dark complexioned, 5'8 in height, wearing a green coat, blue jeans, red hats and carrying a wooden stick.

                     Could you ask everyone to please take care of their sidewalks? Several houses on my street haven't done so in weeks and now the ice is multiple inches thick. To top it off DC Water let water out of the hydrant on the corner, which poured down both the road and sidewalk Friday morning. It then froze, of course, and now we have this. Arrest Made: Assault With Intent to Kill

2200 block of 6^th Street, NW

(Washington, DC) - The Metropolitan Police Department announced an arrest has been made in an Assault With Intent to Kill incident which occurred on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at approximately 2:25 pm, in the 2200 block of 6^th Street, Northwest, where an adult female sustained a laceration to her neck.

Shortly after the incident officers from the Third District arrested 24 year-old Juan Grant of Northwest, Washington, DC, charging him with Assault with Intent to Kill and two counts of Felony Assault on a Police Officer.

Please sign up and pitch in to beautify Bloomingdale and spruce up your block for Spring! Come out - motivate and inspire your neighbors to clean up your street and back alley and plant tree boxes! Free plants, shrubs and mulch will be available on a first-come first-serve basis. Garbage bags and gardening supplies will also be available the morning of the 18th. Trash pick up will be coordinated through out the neighborhood around 1pm the day of the event and then all the block captains and organizers are invited to a pizza social at Bacio.

So join the community to beautify Bloomingdale, celebrate Earth Day 2015 and all together welcome in Spring - finally!

Ward Pest Control (mosquito spraying)

Several residences in Bloomingdale have used Ward Pest Control to spray for mosquitoes. We received a group discount. They charged about $15 or so to spray the front and back yards every three weeks. The total cost for the year was about $140. (They start spraying in early April and finish in October.) This is a substantial savings over other suppliers. It was worth every penny. We had no mosquitoes and could use the yard anytime without getting eaten alive.

You can contact Ward, which is a wonderful small family owned business in Arlington VA, at 703-248-3631. Coordinate with Ward and your neighbors so you too can receive a group discount. (You must all have the yards sprayed on the same day to receive the discount.)
