Hi Patrice,

I need to discuss an issue that has arisen in the Stronghold community. We were contacted by a constituent who claims that the neighborhood is seeing a higher than average number of pancreatic cancer cases. I contacted Alicia Vargas to pull some data on the District-wide and Ward 5-specific cases, but I haven’t heard back. The issue is time sensitive, so if we could chat sometime this afternoon, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Kate Mitchell, Esq.

I am a Stronghold resident very concerned about this matter. I beg of you to review carefully this investigative report by DOH and documents posted before accepting their conclusion. Our concern is the number of cases of pancreatic and related cases in the 18 month period from the first known death in December 2012 to present. There are 6 cases within 12 small blocks during that short period of this rare and deadly cancer. We expected the investigation to follow the guidelines of National Cancer Institute and CDC guidelines for investigating cancer clusters and responding to community concerns. There have not been any visits, interviews, meetings from DOH on this matter although there has been media coverage. The e-mails posted on this site show DOH lack of response and concern in this urgent matter. Although information was requested as early as April 11 it took DOH a month to compile this report. Please note in this report that the DOH statistics on Table 2, page 4 does not include data for 2014 and Table 3 on page 6 does not include 2012, 2013 or 2014, so of course they found no significant increase.
