Rhode Island Avenue NE/Great Streets Strategic Development Plan

Passing this along:

All,

As many of you now know, development of the Rhode Island Avenue NE/Great Streets Strategic Development Plan is underway. The plan will provide recommendations, among others, about how to use the land along Rhode Island Avenue to capture a portion of the $1 billion in retail sales revenues (and jobs) lost each year to other jurisdictions.

Moving forward, it is important to know more about the relationship residents, businesses and property owners have with Rhode Island Avenue. One of the ways to do that is by survey. A confidential and voluntary survey is available online until November 30, 2008. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete. In December, a summary of the survey results will be available to the public.

Here is the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=65teB4MEBR2ZyyPJNm8Juw_3d_3d

Please note that only one survey response is allowed per computer. If there is more than one user for a computer and you need an additional survey please contact me at steve @ collabstrat.com. I can send an additional survey to you electronically, by fax or post.

Thank you for your involvement in this important effort.

Should you have questions about the project, please contact Derrick Lanardo Woody, Coordinator-Great Streets Initiative, Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development at derrick.woody@dc.gov or (202) 727-2981.

Best regards,

Steve

Target

am i the only one thats not that excited about Target in Columbia Heights?

i've hit the one in Potomac Yards, the one in College Park, the one in Hyattsville. i dont avoid target, but i'm also happy to go the few blocks to national wholesale liquidators. i'm just a bit non plussed by Target. i've got plenty of plastic stuff as it is.

thats not to say i'm not happy that DC is on the radar of stores, i just figure theres lots of stuff nearby, and i'd much prefer different things than more of the same, but slighty closer. hopefully it'll keep buckets of tax money in the district and that money will fix the schools, and add to transit infrastructure. and get more police coverage.

and maybe a city funded arts center.

anyway, i'm not meaning to be down on target, i'm sure i'll go there eventually, but i'm just a bit tired of reading about how people dont have to go to the "suburbs" to buy affordable t-shirts. there are places, they just don't have Michael Graves toasters.

timor bodega

See this message from Kim Wee, proprietor of the Timor Bodega, 2nd & Rhode Island Avenue NW.

What's New:

Eco-Friendly Foods--run by a protege of Joel Salatin for those of us who are familiar with The Omnivore's Dilemma--has restocked the store with quite a variety of cuts. Included are pork ham steaks, loin roast, pork belly, beef ribeye steak, london broil and even a big 100-day aged Red Devon Ribeye roast.

There is also ground chicken, lamb and beef and various sausages. The beef and pork are from breeds of heritage, are not available in grocery stores due to limited supply. But you can get them in your own neighborhood alright.

Beer: Samuel Smith's Organic Ale is a must-try for a fruity, almost cidery ale. Plenty of choices for the "hop-heads" though: Double-Daddy IPA, Lagunitas Maximus and Stone IPA among others.

Wine: Organic Pinot Grigio and Cote du Rhone are back, along with a Chardonnay from Bodega Lurton, whose Malbec and Pinot Gris were well-received.

Coffee: We're getting through the last of the syrupy, earthy Balinese coffee this weekend. Up next: a Brazil estate batch.

Weekend Schedule:

Saturday:
Whatsa Bagel Bagels, store open 8:30am-8pm

Sunday:
Atwaters bread, store opens at 9:30am-7pm

Produce from Truck Patch Farms: spring mix, baby spinach etc.

Other organic produce all weekend:
Green beans, celery root, parsnips, rutabagas and mushrooms.

Timor Bodega

Message from Timor Bodega Proprietor Kim Wee

Thursday 7PM
Just a reminder that there will be a wine tasting 7PM at Timor Bodega. I have already gotten a head-start on trying the organic Pinot Grigio and it is rather enjoyable! Should have a last minute addition to the tasting if it makes it onto the delivery truck tomorrow: Simonsig's Pinotage. Also more new beer arrived today from Stone, Bells and Speak Easy breweries.

Coffee Tasting Saturday 10AM:
Calling all coffeeholics, we have some really exotic stuff here. Most of the coffee we drink here is wet-processed, that is to say it has been fermented in a vat before the fruit is washed away. It does not sound too appetizing, and neither are the aromas involved, but it does result in a "clean" tasting cup. Occasionally, we might chance dry-processed coffee, which means it has been left to ferment on the ground or on a screen. This time, would you believe, Tree-dried coffee! From an Indian Estate, it will be roasted and available by the bag all weekend long. Heavy-bodied with low-acidity, it promises rustic fruit tones. I'm excited about this one, but that's not all.....have Balinese and new Brazilian coffee which I will introduce in the following weekends.

Produce Stand Sunday 10-2
SA sourdough, wheat boules, rosemary loaves, seasonally baked pies all from Atwater's bakery in Baltimore. If only there was a bakery like that in DC, I would have bread of this standard every single day. Also, Lulu avocados, Florida citrus, local salad greens, kale, broccoli, bacon and chops from Truck Patch stocked SEVEN days a week now.

Beer Sampling at Timor, 7 PM - 8:30 PM

A message from Timor proprietor Kim Wee:

Yes, it's been a while since our last wine or beer tasting here at Timor Bodega….had some noise issues with the new refrigeration, but blissful silence has been restored, so the place is now good for a chat again! 10 new labels from 4 great American breweries are now waiting for Bloomingdale's beer drinkers at Timor Bodega.

The format will be a little different from the last tasting. Instead of a cover charge, let's try this: When you come in, you pick a beer that you are interested in. I'll open it and the beer will be sampled. If you like it, you can buy the remainder of the six- pack, minus the cost of one bottle. If it's not for you, we'll move right along to the next sample.

Although I am happy to offer courtesy sampling at any reasonable hour for beer drinking, it would be great to do this when at least a few people are around. So I am setting the time for the event loosely at 7 PM - 8:30 PM, as opposed to 7PM on the dot.

Now in:

LAKEFRONTt, Milwaukee:

Organic ESB
Cattail Ale

BELLS, Kalamazoo:

Best Brown Ale
Third Coast Old Ale
Winter White Ale
Double Cream Stout

HE'BREW:

Genesis Ale

LAGUNITAS, Petaluma:

Censored Ale
Lagunitas IPA
Lagunitas Brown Sugar
