> Bloomingdale Farmers Market: "Hey, we're open rain or shine- umbrella and tent edition" -- Sunday, 09-11-2022

Subject: Hey, we're open rain or shine- umbrella and tent edition

Date: September 11, 2022 at 9:22:06 AM EDT

To: robin@marketsandmore.info

Hi BFM Fans!

Of course we are open in pouring rain or light rain or drizzle.  You know that we never close because of a little weather. Ted and the kids have been setting up since 5:30 am. Just bring your umbrella and scoot under the tents if those drops fall. You don't want to miss The Big Brine's pickles, kimchi and kraut or the Moon Cakes that Susan's team has been working on since July!

THE BIG BRINE:  Inspired by our old friends at Number 1 Sons (now sadly closed), Robert makes pickles, krauts and kimchi.Damien at Panorama called to tell us about him as soon as he heard Sons was stopping at the end of August, Ted contacted him before any other market could  and one week after Numaber 1 Sons closed, he joined us.  Come on down.

Moon Cakes. Moon Cake. Moon Cakes. The Mid Autumn Festival started last night and lasts for a few weeks all over Asia.  People nibble moon cakes, sip "hairy crab" tea and contemplate the moon.  Once the clouds clear, we will too.

Susan's team at CHINESE STREET MARKET is the center for Moon Cakes in the DC area. This year she is making her version of Cantonese classics, She has a lot to say about them on her website and rather than paraphrase it, I will link so you can read all the fascinating details about the tradition, history and descriptions of the cakes themselves. WHISKED:

Jenna Says: We know everyone is going in hard for pumpkin spice but we're currently craving our Molasses Spice Cookies. They are oh so perfectly chewy. The dough is made from organic sugar cane, sweet molasses and lots of the good stuff - real butter. We mix in some of our favorite warming spics: cinnamon and nutmeg to make it taste like gingerbread. To top things off, we sprinkle a little sugar on top and bake to perfection.

Pro Tip: If you're still craving pumpkin put a big scoop of pumpkin ice cream between two of these and you will not  be disappointed.

Andre says:  The Weekend Forecast: Sunny with 100 % Chance of Pie. Subject: BFM: RIP, Matteo Catalani

                                                          RIP: Matteo Catalani

Matteo was the soul and passionate cofounder of Cucina Al Volo and we are so sad that he died this week at the age of 29.  He was supposed to study medicine but decided that his path was to be a pastamaker.  We met him when he was 21 and we all adored him. We will miss you, Matteo.

Hi BFM Fans!

I was looking at Debora Robertson's newsletter the other day and saw this very appealing idea for a melon and tomato salad that I will make tomorrow.  It is made with 2 pounds of cantaloupe and about 1.5 pounds of watermelon cut into 1 inch cubes, 1 pound of tomatoes, cut into wedges, a smallish cucumber, halved lengthwise, seeded and sliced into half moons. 2 ounces of black olives, pitted. 3 tablespoons of fruity olive oil, juice of a small juicy lime. A handful of coriander, roughly choped, a handful of mint leaves, roughly chopped, a pinch of chile flakes and a pinch of flaky sea salt. A small red onion, halved and sliced very thin.

Soak the onion in iced water for 15 minutes and drain. Mix the onions and everything else together and serve on a platter or shallow bowl. Serve right away.
