Harmony DC Public Charter School is a STEM focused elementary school in Washington, DC. As a part of our curriculum, all students from Kindergarten through 5th grade work on a science fair project and present it to their peers, teachers, parents, and the community at the Harmony Science and Engineering Fair (HSEF).

We are seeking STEM professionals to serve as judges at HSEF. This gives students an excellent opportunity to interact with college professors, graduate-undergraduate students, and other scientists, and to learn from them.

   
HSEF will take place on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. The schedule for the day is as follows:

8:30 – Judge registration, breakfast, and presentation

9:00 – 11:30 – Project judging
11:30 – Lunch
Judges are welcomed to stay for public view and award ceremony.
12:30 – Public view
1:00 – Award ceremony

17 U Street NW zoning variances case continued to Tuesday, 03-01-2016

The owners of 17 U Street NW seeking a few zoning variances recently came before both the Bloomingdale Civic Association and ANC 5E.   Both organizations gave votes of support. The ANC report was added to the record on January 18.

This case was heard before the DC Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) today.  The case did not get wrapped up today.  The case will be continued to Tuesday, 03-01-2016. 

Note that the property owners submitted revised plans on Tuesday, 01-19-216. Here is a section from the DC Office of Planning report filed on Wednesday, 01-20-2016.

OP has had numerous discussions with the applicant and preliminary discussions Zoning Administrator staff, and it appears that additional or different relief may be needed, including relief from permitted number of stories for the fourth floor addition. In addition, there are discrepancies regarding calculations within the application that need to be resolved.

While the Applicant has been responsive to requests for clarification, these issues remained when this report was required to be filed. As such, OP cannot provide meaningful analysis of the application at this time, and cannot provide a recommendation. OP will continue to work with the Applicant and DCRA on the details of the application, particularly to resolve the exact types and extent of relief required. If additional information resolution of the issues happens prior to the hearing date, OP may be able to provide a supplemental report, or a recommendation at the hearing.

One item mentioned during today’s BZA hearing was that Zoning signs * may * need to be re-posted. 

If there is enough of a change to trigger re-posting signs, then should the BCA and ANC 5E get an opportunity to review the revised plans and vote on them again? 

I don't know.

See this 01-26-2016 message from a neighbor along 1st Street NW in the DC Water 1st Street Tunnel project:

I have just gotten off the phone with 311- operator Dominique.  I explained to Dominque that due to Skanska blocking so many streets, many of us park in the back of our homes in carports or garages.  I asked when would DC plow the allies behind 1st street NW. Imagine my surprise when I was told that 'no alleys will be plowed".  She further stated that if I wanted to pay a private contractor to do our alley, we could.   So if anyone is waiting for the city to plow their alleyway, they can forget it.

Just to make sure that everyone realizes that the DC policy of not plowing alleys is not a new policy.

Perhaps DC Water could be encouraged to plow the alleys that surround the 1st Street Tunnel project areas... ?

I am not sure how Bloomingdale Court NW is treated regarding snowplowing.  It is an official DC street, but is also an alley.   Is it eligible for plowing?  I don't know.

In any event -- might there be interest in someone starting a collection to get some Bloomingdale alleys plowed?

Thrilled to death to announce that Mark Mueller got someone from the Mayor's office to come with a snow blower to clear out my alley. It is now wheelchair acccessible.

Big shout out to our neighbors on W Street who helped clean things out... my husband Tony, our next door neighbor Toni, Mark down the street & Joe across the street.

FYI: I've asked the mayors office twice to send plows to the unit and 100 blocks of U, V, W, & Adams. I also specifically said a lot of the streets around the construction site tend to get forgotten about. So far I haven't seen any plows. At this point, I'm urging people to call 311.

There aren’t many details yet, but a 100-unit residential development is in the planning stages for DC’s Truxton Circle neighborhood.
                                    
Early plans for the project in a vacant lot near 20 P Street NE (map) were presented by developer John Sunter at last week’s Hanover Civic Association (HACA) meeting. HACA’s Leon Braddell told UrbanTurf that the development could include commercial space and underground parking.

Washington Business Journal reporter Michael Neibauer spotted this Bloomingdale street address is his DCRA permit review today.

• 61 Bryant St. NW: Conversion of a single-family home to a two-family flat. The basement unit will include two bedrooms, a bathroom, utility room and closet with a washer and dryer. Work will also include installation of a new concrete staircase from the basement patio to grade, construction of a new two-story wood deck and removal of load bearing partition walls on the first and second floors.
