HU Alumna Senator Kamala Harris Announces 2020 U.S. Presidential Candidacy

Kamala Harris (BA 1986), a barrier-breaking U.S. senator and former California attorney general, announced her 2020 presidential campaign on ABC's Good Morning America on Jan. 21.

The daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica, Harris has been seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, even before she won her senate seat in 2016. Harris received national attention as San Francisco district attorney before her election as California Attorney General in 2010.

The announcement was made on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day which Harris’s campaign said was intended to be a reminder of the “inspirational fight for progress” that marked her upbringing and guides her today.

“Let’s do this, together. Let’s claim our future. For ourselves, for our children, and for our country,” Harris said in a campaign video. “The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values.”

Dexter Williams

Dexter Williams is the former Government Affairs Associate in the Office of External Affairs at Howard University. In this role, he represented the University before the D.C. government and implemented strategies to acquire resources from the city to fulfill the University's mission. Prior to Howard, he worked for a U.S. Senator, a non-profit organization, and a law firm where he advised healthcare, education, and local government clients on federal matters.

Mr. Williams is heavily involved in D.C. political affairs. He was recently elected as one of the Ward 7 Democratic State Committeemen, representing Ward 7 on the D.C. Democratic Party Steering Committee. There, he focuses on voter education and leveraging the party's resources to help District residents.

From 2016-2018, he was instrumental in leading the successful effort to pass the D.C. Fair Elections Act of 2017, which fundamentally changed the way leaders are elected in the city by making the political process more fair and ensuring that District residents have a seat at the table.

Howard Healthy for the Holidays

On December 22, 2018, Howard University partnered with the South East Tennis and Learning Center located at 701 Mississippi Avenue, S.E. to host the first annual “Howard Healthy for the Holidays” event.

Members from various HU offices came out to help provide families of Wards 7 and 8 with toys for children, along with cold weather gear to help keep them warm during the holidays.

Special thanks to the HU Office of External Affairs, Debbi Jarvis-the new Senior VP of Corporate Relations, and Dr. Mark Johnson from Howard University Hospital’s Community and Family Medicine practice. WHUR broadcast the event live. In addition to the gifts, each family received a $25 grocery gift certificate to help celebrate the holiday. More than 80 families received special holiday cheer.

HOWARD UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Howard University Cancer Center And Driver Partner To Expand Access To Advanced Treatments For African American Cancer Patients

The Howard University Cancer Center and Driver are working together to expand access to advanced therapies for cancer patients receiving care at Howard University Hospital (HUH), in Washington, D.C. This joint effort will seek to match African American cancer patients to cancer clinical trials at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

“Howard University’s Cancer Center serves a population that is around 90 percent African American. For many of the cancers that we commonly treat, this group has some of the highest mortality rates of any racial or ethnic groups,” says Dr. Carla D. Williams, Howard University associate professor of medicine and public health and interim director of the Howard University Cancer Center. “Working with Driver and the NCI increases the efficiency of providing our community with access to cutting-edge treatment options. This brings these treatments within reach of people who otherwise might not have access.”
