The fireworks are done and the summer heat is here. Gas prices are up. The BFM offers local produce that is worth the walk. Ted says: If you want a real local treat pick up some Trickling Springs Dairy heavy cream from Timor Bodega, whip it up and flavor it with lemon zest and vanilla.

Then pick your choice of fresh berries or peaches from Reid's Orchard. Find a clear pint glass and build a cream and fruit parfait. Garnish with a sprig of mint from the 7th street garden. Ok that's desert now for the rest of a perfect summer meal..........

Start your prefect summer meal by not heating up your home with the stove or oven. Create a cool tasty salad from their great choice of salad greens and fresh herbs: lettuce, arugula, mesclun, purslane, radishes, and mint, oregano, sage, chives, basil. Then try some AppleWurst from Truck Patch Farm cooked on the grill..

Lemon verbena


1/2 cup of fresh mint leaves (not the stems, they're bitter), rinsed, lightly packed (about 20 leaves)
1/2 cup of fresh lemon verbena leaves, rinsed, lightly packed (about 10-15 leaves)
2 cups of water
METHOD
Bring a pot of fresh water almost, but not quite to a boil. Put the mint and verbena leaves in a teapot. Pour the hot water over the leaves. Let sit for 3-5 minutes. Strain into tea cups.
Makes 2 cups.

Reid: There will be buckets of dark sweet and sour cherries and they won't be in season much longer. Lots of berries -- red and black raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, currants, gooseberries. Methley sugar plums (purple and juicy), shiro plums(yellow and sweet) plums, tart Lodi sauce apples, white and yellow peaches. Herbs by popular demand- basil, cilantro, thyme, rosemary, oregano and lavender

Fruit Salad Tip: sprinkle a little sugar at the bottom of a bowl. Grind chopped basil and mint leaves into the sugar to a paste, then add your cut up fruit and sprinkle with lemon juice. The sugar-herb paste is wonderful and the lemon heightens the flavor of the summer berries and fruits. Try it!.

Add to your perfect summer meal with a wide choice of Garner veggies to grill or cut into salads.

Garner: Make a cucumber and yogurt salad with slices of their sweet onions and mint. Crush some garlic and it turns into a great relish for meat or beans. Grate the cucumbers . Add some crushed walnuts and thin it down with more yogurt and it is a cool, pretty cucumber soup. Grill corn on the cob and rub it with lime and cayenne pepper -- or butter. Or all three.


TIP: Slice up tomatoes and sprinkle them with salt, add some shredded basil leaves. Drizzle on the olive oil but hold the vinegar. The tomato juice makes the perfect vinaigrette. After you eat the slices, mop up that basil= infused juice with some Breadline bread. That's heaven.

Grill their peppers(green bell, king arthur, blushing beauty,lilac), sweet peppers(sweet bananas, yummy mix,)jalepeno peppers. Add some cubed cantaloupes and sugar babies watermelon to your fruit salad. Don't forget the okra and the potato salad.

James Bond Film Festival Continues in NoMa:

“The Spy Who Loved Me” Thursday, July 10 --

First “Bike-In Movie Night”

Washington, D.C., July 7, 2008….The summer-long James Bond Film Festival, hosted by the NoMa (North of Massachusetts Avenue) Business Improvement District (BID) in Washington, D.C., continues this week with a free showing of “The Spy Who Loved Me” on Thursday, July 10 starting at sundown.

The film will be shown outdoors at the intersection of Florida and New York Avenues, N.E. The site is located directly across Florida Avenue from the New York Avenue Metro station on the Red Line and the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) headquarters. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and walk, bike, or take Metro. Nearly 200 people attended the most recent film showing.

On July 10 and August 7, the BID has teamed with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association to sponsor Bike-In Movie Nights, with WABA volunteer bike valets parking filmgoers’ bikes for free. WABA also will have an information table with the latest edition of the DC Bike Map, a pocket guide to DC bike law, and safe cycling guides, and will offer special $25 discounted WABA memberships. WABA also is providing free bike racks for all the James Bond movie nights for the rest of the summer.

The James Bond Film Festival will be held each Thursday night through August 28, rain or shine, with each film showing preceded by an Odd-job and other Bond character look-alike contest. The film series will take place on the future site of MRP Realty’s Washington Gateway project, a one million square foot mixed-use project that will begin construction later this year. Garner's full of summer veggies that are perfect for 6th of July picnics: White sweet corn ("Cream of the Crop" Lots of tomatoes: cherry tomatoes, sunbrite,early girls & green tomates. Peppers. Peppers. Peppers: jalapaneos, yellow, purple and green sweet bell peppers to grill Hot peppers, sweet banana and Munchi mix sweet peppers for salads or to saute with their bunching onions, tomatoes and Truck Patch's sausages. Cucumbers, new potatoes in shades of red,white,yellow (think Potato salad spiced up with their hot peppers), Valentino Green Beans, squash (yellow, zucchini, eightball, one-ball, sunburst, and whites squash), cabbages to make your holiday cole slaw and....bushels of small, sweet cantaloup.

They grow great corn. Brush thick slices of their eggplant with some olive oil, then slap them on the grill. When they are done, sprinkle them with some chopped fresh basil and oregano and a splash of balsamic vinegar. You can do the same thing with their summer squash
Add some sides of sliced tomatoes, julienned radishes with lime juice and cilantro.


Chef Ted plans to do more off- the -grill cooking demos. Last week was Truck Patch sausages and pork shoulder BBQ. This week will be everything veggie for those of you who swing that way....


Reid: The big story this week: CHERRIES. Caitlin is going to have lots of Bing dark sweet cherries, Queen Anne blush sweet cherries, Spanish white cherries, and a nice supply of Sour Pie Cherries for everyone's pie & jam needs (the pie cherries tend to have a very short season). She'll also have apricots, their delicious yellow peaches (Rich May & Sweet Scarlet varieties), white peaches (Spring Snow), nectarines, blueberries, and red raspberries. Fruit salad time. And cobblers. Fruit cobblers are VERY easy to make:

TIP: Just stir together one-half cup of flour with one-fourth cup of sugar, slice one-fourth cup of butter into 1-tablespoon pieces and cut that into the flour and sugar until you have a crumbly mixture.
Slice the fruit into a baking dish and sweeten it slightly. You can add warm spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to either the fruit or the topping. Scatter the crumb mixture over the top and bake at 350 degrees until the topping is crisp and brown and the fruit is juicy and fragrant. Breadline will have all the good bread you want to wrap around a sausage or grilled veggies or dip into ratatouille, rolls for hamburgers, muffins, cookies, loaves....

In the coming days the District of Columbia will be implementing new rules
and regulations regarding the Supreme Court decision in the District of
Columbia v. Heller (handgun) case. The Supreme Court ruled that residents
will be allowed to possess handguns in their homes. It is critical that all
Metropolitan Police Department members know the immediate impact of this
ruling:

* All Firearms including handguns must be registered with the
Metropolitan Police Department's Firearms Registration Section before they
may be legally possessed.
* Automatic and semi-automatic handguns remain ineligible for
registration.
* The Supreme Court's ruling is limited to handguns in the home and
does not affect the legality of firearms carried outside of the home.
* The Metropolitan Police Department will urge residents that do
obtain licenses to carry weapons in the home to also keep that weapon either
disassembled or secured with a locking device (not a current legal
requirement).

What Happens Now?

The Supreme Court will formally issue its mandate within the next month,
possibly as early as July 17, 2008. The U.S. Court of Appeals will then
send the case to the U.S. District Court to enter an injunction. The
injunction is the court order that will officially prevent the District
government from enforcing the handgun ban. That process may take a few
months. Within 21 days, the Metropolitan Police Department will promulgate
regulations to accommodate the process of registering handguns for lawful
possession.

No. Residents may not go out and get handguns, though they will soon be
able to do so. There is further court action before the Supreme Court's
decision is implemented and the handgun ban is officially lifted, though
that should happen within the next few months. It should be emphasized that
even after the handgun ban is lifted, those who wish to possess handguns
will first be required to register them with the Metropolitan Police
Department, as they must do with all firearms, in order for the possession
to be legal. Furthermore, under the Supreme Court's decision, possession of
properly registered handguns will still be legal only in one's own home.

Yes, under District law that the Supreme Court did not disturb, someone who
seeks to register any firearm must meet certain requirements. Among these
are that the would-be registrant must be 21 years of age and cannot have
been convicted of a felony or other crime of violence or weapons crime, or
have been committed to a mental hospital within the past five years.
Registrants also must be fingerprinted and pass a test regarding knowledge
of District gun laws.

after never showing up when i called to request a cab, i wont be calling Diamond Cab again. I'd recommend others to not waste their time. i'm not a very experienced cab user, but i would think that cabs ought to at least show up, and dispatchers shouldn't be rude to you on the phone. rudeness always looses my business.
thankfully, just before the deluge at around 9:00 PM last night, we hailed a cab on north capitol.

The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision went further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact.

Campers will participate in environmental projects, creative arts, sports, campfires, aquatic activities, all while experiencing the great outdoors.

Satomi Shirai, Hunter College MFA Candidate 2009, uses large scale photography to depict cultural connections and disconnections that were results of moving from Japan to New York City.

Amy Misurelli Sorensen, American University MFA 2008, paints multiple face masks as consequences to distorted images of female sexuality imposed by an Italian Catholic upbringing.

Amber Hawk Swanson, School of the Art Institute of Chicago MFA 2006, explores the interplay between repulsion, desire, and surrender. By inserting a sexually available replica of herself into already charged environments, the possibility of peril often interrupts allegiance to the social codes of each space.

Pierrette Montone, Corcoran College of Art + Design BFA 2008, creates a playful mural on femininity in a post-feminist generation.

Lauren Bender, received a BS in Honors Painting at Towson University 2003, performs CorpOreo a piece that investigates the self/other and a breakdown of communication, influenced by the real-life experience of being a twin.

Sara Hubbs, the George Washington University MFA 2008, installs Hides 'N Heels, a sculpture that deals with concepts of place, commerce, and notions of femininity as seen through two opposing viewpoints; one of a frontier-like mentality and one in search of authenticity or essence.

Trish Tillman, School of Visual Arts MFA Candidate 2009, uses deceptively simple linework, bright colors, and abstracted yet familiar forms in her drawings and overflowing closet sculpture to seduce the viewer into confronting themes of personal growth, psychological confinement, and self-imposed displacement.

Meg Onli, School of the Art Institute of Chicago BFA 2008, exhibits preliminary drawings and letters that have led to a current month-long performance that entails retracing the steps of a mulatto lesbian on the Underground Railroad between Rockville, Maryland and the historical settlement of Dawn, Canada. The walk began on June 3rd, 2008 and is anticipated to end in early July, 2008.

Pamela Norrish, Alberta College of Art + Design BFA Candidate 2009, displays an array of delicate music boxes that resemble female body parts. These seemingly childish toys hold uncomfortable female expectations as the viewer winds up the box and puts it into motion.

Zoe Blackwell, California College of Art BFA 2008, shows embroidered poly-satin swatches that explore our human tendencies to recognize and assign code, pattern, secrecy, and preciousness. Simple tags hang quietly off of each swatch to push and pull the meanings of the embroidered words into a myriad of directions.

Lauren Rice, American University MFA 2008, uses found objects that have masculine and feminine connotations to transform one of the second floor galleries into a space that is both gaudy and beautiful.

Roxxanne Reed, Corcoran College of Art + Design BFA Candidate 2009, uses the films of Kenneth Anger in a futile attempt to eradicate any trace of femininity in a recontextualized video that begins in the realm of dreams and ends in the peace of sleep.


The Bobby Fisher Memorial Building is pleased to announce the opening of Girlish Ways: The Next Generation of Female Artists, an exhibition examining how contemporary lifestyles effect and re-define the women of this generation. The exhibition recognizes exceptional female art students and graduates of BFA and MFA institutions around the United States and Canada. Girlish Ways explores youthful and mature concerns of the women involved, as well as how these women respond to their changing environments. Various issues are investigated, including cultural re-location, sexuality, public image, and post-feminism. Girlish Ways uses a range of subtle and overtly post-feminist art to engage the viewer in this diverse generation of women artists. The exhibition consists of a multitude of media and a live performance on the opening night by Lauren Bender.

LeDroit Park Gate Destroyed***updated

Community:

I regret to inform you that this evening (Saturday 6/21/08) at approximately 6:00 PM a deranged driver destroyed the new LeDroit Park Iron Gate at the corners of Florida Avenue and 6th & T Streets NW. The Civic Association is working with the city & DDOT to have the repairs made as soon as possible.

At this time, we are asking the community to assist us in locating the iron pieces that have already been removed from the site.

The missing parts include the "LeDroit Park" name, date & scrollwork. Please help us in this search (no questions asked).

GOOD NEWS! We have received absolute confirmation that the "letters"
from the LeDroit Park Iron Gate are in safe keeping with a member of the

Regarding repairs, we have already been contacted by DDOT and they will
be on site tomorrow (Monday 6/23) to assess the situation and they
intend to report back to the community prior to Tuesday's Civic
Association Meeting (7:00 PM at the Florida Avenue Baptist Church).

How would you feel about rebuilding Truxton Circle?
What effects do you think it would have on foot traffic in the north capitol corridor?

A little further up North Capitol Street, there is a trench dug out of the road allowing traffic to pass under T Street and Rhode Island Avenue.
I'd like to suggest the open area between T and Rhode Island be covered to allow for greenspace on top



currently the division between the neighborhoods of Bloomingdale and Eckington is rather stark.

I;'d love to bridge that division.

imagine if that trench was covered to create a public space. summertime movie nights with the capitol in the background, perhaps?
how about a sculpture garden?


It seems as though Martini 2020, otherwise know as the old firehouse, is moving forward. The Borf Mansion seems to generate a lot of foot traffic in the neighborhood when they have events.

or maybe The Garden District? or better yet, does someone in the neighborhood have the desire to open up their shop here? i hear that Stu Davenport wants a Pizza Parlor.


There was talk on neighborhood listserves about marketing the area to developers and to create a "theme" for this corridor. I find this to be quite a bit tacky and wildly inappropriate, personally. To me, marketing the strip as "italian" as some have suggested, is insulting to who we are as a present day community. An ethnically oriented marketing only serves its purpose if its homegrown. and while there may be some history to that claim, there is little present in it. i prefer to live in my present day community, which i love, than some romanticized version of the past. granted, i love that people care enough to make suggestions, and to wish for things to become better, and to reverse the history of disinvestment. Still, we need to recognize our diversity and our present day culture in trying to grow.
My hope is that we can find ways to encourage those that live in the community to fill niches they feel are missing ( like the Big Bear) or encourage existing business to grow and change ( like Windows cafe) and to also encourage the type of DIY mentality that has made the borf mansion a vibrant scene ( yeah.. i know.. i know, but i like their direction, and people defintitely come out for their events.)

Anyway, i hope that people can use the comments here to engage in a (civil) discussion about what you'd like to see. we all know the hurdles, we all know the negatives, but it'd be great to hear of possibilities and solutions.

Earlier this year, North Capitol Main Street (NCMS) was awarded a Neighborhood Investment Grant to make physical improvements to the North Capitol Street corridor.

Over the past month, handsome wrought iron tree-box guards were installed to match the existing wrought iron fencing in the median strip along parts of North Capitol Street. Even though the fencing is up, we're not quite ready for plants yet . . .

Question: How do you transform 28 trash-glass-and-weed-filled tree box spaces into 28 spaces with beautiful plants that bring year-round beauty?

Answer: With a little help from our friends . . .

I was out of town last week when we had that crazy storm so i missed all the water and flooded streets.
A neighbor sent this email and photos concerning Rhode Island Avenue


Bloomingdale is Drowning!


Okay, so that's hyperbole, but seriously, what's up with our Department of Public Works and WASA that they refuse to fix the storm drain on Rhode Island Ave on the east bound side just before 1st ST NW in front of houses 120 and 122?

From about 8pm Wednesday nignt until 11am Thursday morning it looked like the attached pics.

Cars were struggling to get through. What if an ambulance was trying to get to Washington Hospital Center and couldn't because of this ridiculous amount of water?

I called WASA emergency several times (the lady was nice and trying to be helpful) and they finally sent a street sweeper to attempt to clear debris around midnight. Despite 30 minutes of effort, the street sweeper was unsuccessful.

I've come to learn that neighbors have repeatedly called WASA about this storm drain being clogged with trash and leaves, yet they have not cleared it yet. I was out of town for the Saturday storms of May 31 but I hear the same thing happened as on Wednesday night which is when I took the pics.

I figure if we can get this info in a public forum maybe the storm drain can get cleared properly and stop putting our houses at risk for serious and damaging flooding.

Then i received this update


I sent basically that same email and all the same pictures to the Public Affairs Director at WASA, Michele Quander-Collins shortly after emailing you. She responded quickly, told me they'd send a crew out that same day, and sure enough my wife watched them come out, get the man hole cover off the storm drain and pull tons of leaves and debris out of the catch drain and the rest of the sewer.

Obviously last night (Wed) it rained extremely hard again. The drain worked great. The water never breached the curb. Bravo to WASA on the quick response. I think it is just as important to highlight when the system works properly.

It is also proof that continued community involvement by the people of Bloomingdale and constructive, rational inteaction with our city officials is the best way to improve our little corner of the city.

They will bring: quarts of mixed baby squash (zucchini, one ball, 8 ball, sunburst, pattypan, Kousa), mixed summer squash, squash blossoms, broccoli, baby new potatoes (red Pontiac and Yukon Gold), asparagus, vidalia-style sweet onions, spring onions, english peas (shelled and unshelled), sugar snaps, purple top turnips, Choggia beets, red beets, swiss Chard.....and the first raspberries of the season (come early, they will go fast)

And Flowers, too. They will bring their field- grown flowers (lilies, yarrow, zinnia) and their beautiful hanging baskets on Sunday. (They will also have bedding plants and flowers.)

He has exhibited at the Kathleen Ewing Gallery in Washington, D.C. (1988-1989), the Emilio Navarro Gallery in Madrid, Spain (1992-1993), as well as several times at Hemphill Fine Arts, located in Washington, D.C., where he exhibited [still life] in 2003. Among his many group exhibitions, in 1991 he exhibited “Portraits” in Basel, Switzerland and in 1996, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, Caldwell’s work was shown in an exhibition called “Reimagining the Real”. In 1999, he collaborated with Bernard Welt on Ordinary Eternal Machinery, a video piece. His work was recently selected for inclusion in the 2005 Corcoran Biennial, Corcoran Museum of Art, Washington, D. C.

I will be holding a roundtable discussion on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 7 pm at the Isle of Patmos Baptist Church, located at 12 Street and Rhode Island Avenue NE. The purpose of the roundtable is to get input from residents and business owners on legislation to govern the sale of single containers of alcoholic beverages in Ward 5.

Legislation has been introduced for Wards 4, 7 and 8 to prohibit the sale of an individual container of the package if the capacity of the individual container is 70 ounces or less, as well as prohibit the division of a manufacturer's package of more than one container of beer, malt liquor or ale.

Outdoor Movie In NoMa Tonight! Goldfinger

James Bond Film Festival Continues in NoMa:

“Goldfinger” Thursday, May 22

Washington, D.C., May 21, 2008….The summer-long James Bond Film Festival, hosted by the NoMa (North of Massachusetts Avenue) Business Improvement District (BID) in Washington, D.C.., continues this week with a free showing of “Goldfinger” on Thursday, May 22 starting at dusk.

The film will be shown outdoors at the intersection of Florida and New York Avenues, N.E. The site is located directly across Florida Avenue from the New York Avenue Metro station on the Red Line and the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) headquarters. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and walk, bike, or take Metro.

On the Fly, DC’s latest craze in street vending, will have its bright green electric vehicle onsite serving great food from some of the city’s favorite local restaurants like Julia’s Empanadas, Rocklands BBQ, and more.

The James Bond Film Festival will be held each Thursday night through August 28, rain or shine, with each film showing preceded by an Odd-job and other Bond character look-alike contest. The film series will take place on the future site of MRP Realty’s Washington Gateway project, a one million square foot mixed-use project that will begin construction later this year. This Saturday, please join us for a BBQ in the park to help us finish consuming all the leftover food and drink from last week's yard sale. And, er, don't dress too nicely, because we'd like you to get a little dirty while you're here! It's another Park Work Day, and we welcome any help you can give, no matter how little or how much. Possible projects this weekend include:

Weeding the Memory Garden and other planting beds
Continuing to install the wooden timber border along the edge of the park
Installing the low fencing and signage to demarcate the dog-friendly and dog-free zones
Planting groundcover in new beds

We plan on starting at 10am, and we'll have the burgers and dogs ready by around 12:30 pm or so. Hope to see many of you there!

important meeting wednesday night

On Wednesday, May 21 and Thursday, June 5, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, the Office of Planning will host meetings for the Neighborhood Investment Fund (NIF) for the Bloomingdale-Eckington NIF area. Both meetings will be held at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church located at 75 Rhode Island Avenue, NW .

The Neighborhood Investment Act of 2004, as amended (NIA) created a non-lapsing, revolving fund outside of the General Fund, called the Neighborhood Investment Fund (NIF). The NIF is funded through an annual appropriation of 15% of a personal property tax, not to exceed $10 million.

The purpose of the NIF is to finance economic development and neighborhood revitalization in 12 targeted areas of the District.

The Office of Planning is partnering with the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development to work with community stakeholders to prepare investment plans for the 12 Neighborhood Investment Fund Target Areas. Please join us for this series of workshops to help determine how best to use the funds for Bloomingdale and Eckington.

Big Yard Sale at Crispus Attucks! this Saturday!

I'll be at the open studio of the washington glass school this saturday, but i would like to encourage everyone to hit up on the Crispus Attucks Yard Sale. This is a wonderful event in a FANTASTIC park. ( if you care to do both.. please come to the glass school event! but definitely Crispus Attucks)

Friends of Crispus Attucks Park:

Several of you have mentioned that you were interested in selling at this year's Bloomingdale Community Yard Sale in Crispus Attucks Park, but hadn't signed up because you didn't want to have to haul everything back home that you weren't able to sell.

Well, we have some good news! Mike Pietch, owner of Pietch Moving, is offering to haul to Goodwill items that people don't want to carry back home with them. If you're interested, please just keep a few things in mind:
-CADC will be asking for a small monetary donation (probably about $10) from those who wish to take advantage of this service.
-Goodwill will not accept just anything, so you should be selective in what you bring to the Yard Sale.
-If your unsold items are deemed inappropriate for Goodwill, there will be a dumpster available, however, it has limited capacity, so we cannot 100% guarantee there will be room for everything.
-Leaving any unsold items in the Park or its surrounding alleys or streets is strictly prohibited.
-We'll need you to help load your items into the truck; we don't have enough volunteers to do this ourselves.
-We will not be able to provide you with a receipt from Goodwill for the donation.


We hope this makes it easier for some people to sell this year.

But hurry, the Yard Sale and Health Fair event is THIS Saturday, May 17th. Registering to sell is just $35 -- a bargain since we do all the promotion and advertising for you (including Washington Post, DC North, City Paper, Craig's List, listserves, Yard Sale sites, posters, banners, and flyering around the neighborhood and around town).

Blood Drive on Saturday

On May 10, from noon until 4 p.m., Artomatic will be sponsoring a blood drive to benefit the Blood Donor Center at Children's National Medical Center. The drive will take place on the grounds of the Capitol Plaza I building, site of this year's Artomatic. The Capitol Plaza I building is located at 1200 First Street, NE, Washington, DC, 20002 (New York Avenue Metro stop, M Street exit). Children's National Medical Center will be bringing a bloodmobile to collect donations on-site.
"Artomatic is a community arts event, and this is one of the many ways that we are giving back to our community," said Artomatic artist Kerri Sheehan, who is helping coordinate the blood drive.

The Greyhound block is finally on the block.

The 1.6-acre depot at First and K streets NE, behind Union Station in the booming NoMa neighborhood, just went on the market after years of discussion about what to do with the site. D.C. officials have long wanted Greyhound to relocate, but the bus company was never able to cut a deal to move to Union Station.
