Crispus Attucks Park Cocktail Party Fundraiser
                 

When: Sunday, October 27, 3-5 p.m.              

Where: The backyard of 2024 North Capitol Street NW—overlooking the east end of Crispus Attucks Park. 

Who: Everyone, but especially you!

On Sunday, October 27, 3-5pm, Crispus Attucks Development Corporation (CADC) is hosting a cocktail party, fundraiser and information session.  We encourage all who enjoy Crispus Attucks Park to attend!

Crispus Attucks Park is operated and maintained by CADC, a non-profit organization made up entirely of volunteers and park neighbors. Crispus Attucks Park is fully open to the public, but it is not a city park and receives NO money from the government. All maintenance and upkeep is paid for and performed entirely by the CADC Board and generous friends of the park. CADC exists solely on community support. 100% of donated funds go DIRECTLY to the protection, maintenance, upkeep and development of the park.

                    

This year has seen both successes and challenges.  In very encouraging news, this September a DC Superior Court Judge ruled unequivocally that CADC owns and is the rightful steward of Crispus Attucks Park. This ruling ends the lawsuit that began in 2012, when an area resident falsely represented himself as CADC, caused confusion to DC Police and other government agencies, and threatened the essence of Crispus Attucks Park's existence. We are very happy this sad chapter of our history is over.

               

Unfortunately, fighting these frivolous claims was not cheap.  It required diverting significant funds—donated by our members and other generous neighbors—from the park toward legal fees. These fees required us to cut back on regular maintenance and improvements to the park—work we would like to get back to doing. It costs roughly $10,000 each year—just to maintain the park—that does not include any additional projects or improvements.

               

That’s why we need your help. 100% of the parks funds go to maintaining the park. The board members are all unpaid volunteers who believe in Bloomingdale and want to create a safe, inviting green space for the entire community.

          

So let's have some fun, learn about getting involved with the park, and raise funds for an important community project!

Join us on Sunday, October 27th from 3-5 p.m. to find out more about Bloomingdale’s hidden gem and meet some of your neighbors! Come meet the board and other volunteers and find out more about what you can do to ensure Crispus Attucks Park remains a beautiful, open and safe space for the community.

Notice on page 3 under "proposed plan" the draft recommendation to implement "mini-roundabouts along 1st Street NW from New York Avenue NW up to Bryant Street NW.  One might assume that the mini-roundabouts would not be considered for intersections already served by traffic signals, such as 1st & New York Ave NW, 1st & Florida Ave NW and 1st and Rhode Island Ave NW.

Have no clue what a mini-roundabout is?

Public Asked to Prioritize Long Range Transportation Concerns

Innovative Online Survey Launches Today to Assess Public Transportation Priorities

 

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) seeks the public’s input on moveDC, DDOT's initiative to develop a coordinated, multimodal long range transportation plan for the District. DDOT is using a fun and interactive online tool to collect perspectives on future District-wide transportation strategies. Everyone who drives, walks, bikes, rides a bus, or takes a train in DC has a stake in how the transportation plan unfolds, and all are encouraged to lend their voices to this online conversation. The survey launches today and will run throughout October 2013. The survey link is available online at: http://movedc.metroquest.com/

 

The tool, MetroQuest, will allow people to express their interests in transportation and then review the ways in which different approaches to developing the city’s transportation system match those interests. The three distinct approaches to the future transportation system—Stay the Course, Get to the Center, and Connect the Neighborhoods—offer different features and outcomes. Participants of the survey will be able to rate each of these approaches based on how each aligns with their interests, and by seeing how prioritizing an approach affects specific outcomes in the District. Building on this rating, participants will get a chance to allocate money to various parts of the approaches to express their thoughts about priority and importance. 

 

moveDC’s MetroQuest will allow people who participate in the survey to better understand tradeoffs in the context of a citywide transportation plan. The results from the survey will be used, in combination with other public input, to develop a balanced citywide transportation plan addressing many different needs.

 

In addition to the MetroQuest survey, moveDC has held two rounds of public workshops and administered district-wide survey research.  These outreach events have engaged the public to discuss transportation and how it can help build a more prosperous, sustainable, competitive and vital city. A final round of public workshops will occur later in October, where people will have the opportunity re-engage the planning process and share input on the plan’s recommendations. woman assaulted at the 300 block of T St NW early this morning, Monday, 09-30-2013

Bloomingdale Community, I'd like to share that I was assaulted while I was walking to the Howard University Metro stop early this morning on T Street, NW, between 3rd and 4th Streets NW.  At approximately 5:50 a.m., a jogger passed me, surprising and startling me.  I slightly jumped but felt calm when I realized he was only a jogger.  He jogged passed me, stopped at the corner, and began stretching.  As I passed him, I slightly glanced at him in acknowledgement as I passed him.  Shortly after I passed him, he approached me from behind and reached under my dress into my underwear. I was so startled and screamed very loudly so the man ran away.  I was immediately heard and assisted by another passerby and neighbor (who came out of his home), both of whom attempted to find the assailant.  They were unable to find him.  The passerby was about 1/2 block behind me and had witnessed the assailant walking behind me. The passerby seems convinced that the assailant had followed me for two blocks (and the passerby actually quickened his own pace to catch up with me in case I needed help because he felt something wasn't right).
            
I believe the assailant to be a Hispanic male in his late 30's.  He was approximately 5'8"/5'9", medium/athletic build (160 lbs or so), fair-skinned, very short (but not cropped) black hair, and square face.  He was wearing a white tee shirt and light gray jogging pants.  This description was also confirmed by the passerby.
        
I have reported it to DC Police and the two police officers and two detectives who arrived on the scene have been extremely responsive and helpful.  They have opened an active investigation and are regarding this violation as a 'sexual assault'.  I am very thankful to them, as well as the passerby and neighbor who immediately helped me.
                                                                                   
I share this with all of you so that are aware.  While it wasn't dawn yet, I was walking on well-lit T Street and the assault happened on a well-lit corner with a traffic signal.  I wasn't wearing headphones and generally feel relatively aware of my surroundings.  However, I am a petite and small-framed woman in my 30s and I know that I am lucky that I did not experience serious bodily harm. I have own my condo in Bloomingdale and have peacefully and safely lived here for the past two years but this incident has made me feel very nervous. Please be careful out there no matter what time of day and please always be aware of those around you.

“I wanted to send over the details of Sebastian Zutant’s second collaboration beer with DC Brau that’s launching Tuesday, October 1st. Sebastian is the co-owner/beverage director at The Red Hen.
This one is called the Dorcia and they’re brewing it by aging the Penn Quarter Porter on the lees of RdV’s Rendezvous blend in a Bordeaux barrel from Linden. It’s then removed and filtered. The result is a red wine driven, robust porter with a strong chocolate finish. It’s smoky, complex and great for fall.
                 
They’ve made eight kegs and will be serving it for $9 a pint.”

Your money will cover all expenses, the music, the street performers, the face painters, the balloons, apples, pop corn, candy and more. You'll see posters advertising the event as soon as next week.

 

Event Recap:

                                                  

- Festivities are scheduled for Thursday, October 31st from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

- The theme is a "New Orleans Masquerade."

- We'll get started with 2 stilt walkers and 2 face painters.

- At the same time (new item),  to warm up the crowds, we'll  get a free hour-long musical contribution from our own and proper hip-hop talent Solstik.
