Dear Councilmember McDuffie and ANC Representatives,

Independent Filmmaker, Alex Sherman is scheduled to film a project in your area this weekend.

The District Government has granted Mr. Sherman and his crew permission to film and park a few of their production vehicles at the following locations, dates, and times:

·         R St NW between 3^rd and 4^th Streets

Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

·         U St NW between 1^st and 2^nd Streets

Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Operations Division may assist with pedestrian control during this filming as it relates to potentially delicate social issues (abuse of police power).

At present, there are only two vehicles and 9 cast/crew scheduled for use in this production, so parking shouldn’t become an issue. However, we ask that residents please avoid parking in areas that may be posted with “Emergency No Parking” signs. In the event that a vehicle is situated in such a “No Parking” zone, it will be relocated to a nearby location at no cost to the resident. Residents may call (202) 737-4404 to locate a towed vehicle.

The Office of Motion Picture and Television Development, in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police Department, are working with the production company to minimize the impact of this for residents and businesses in the area.

No sooner had we adjourned our monthly Bloomingdale Civic Association meeting, at which Sgt. Nelson from MPD talked about the recent rash of break-ins of basement units and the need to stay vigilant, than I received a call from my friend (and new BCA member) to come over because the basement unit in the house he lives in had been broken into and he didn't want to enter his house without backup.. (He lives in the upper house; it was thankfully intact) The perpetrator did a number on the door to the unit, which is unoccupied at the moment, so they most likely made off with nothing. MPD was called and a report for an "open door" was taken pending the landlord advancing it to breaking & entering, which my friend will advise him to do.

It's sad that there are constant reminders right now that we must stay extremely vigilant if we're going to keep Bloomingdale a safe community for all.

For Robert Sonderman, pitmaster and owner of DCity Smokehouse on Florida Avenue NW, plans to grow the tiny barbecue joint can’t come fast enough.

As he deals with a water pipe break at his current location, which has shut down operations for days now, Sonderman is also working out the details on two deals that will expand his smokehouse empire: One will move his tiny treehouse of a barbecue shop to the ground floor of a small condo unit at 1700 Second St. NW. Sonderman says he's in the final stages of purchasing the space. He hopes to close within a month or so.

The other deal will expand DCity, at least for awhile, to a parcel of land just across Penn Street NE from the Dolcezza Gelato Factory and Coffee Lab in the Union Market area. The land is part of Gallaudet University's Sixth Street Development, a planned mixed-use destination that the school is developing with the JBG Companies. But those plans are far into the future; in the meantime, Sonderman has cut a deal that will allow him to smoke meats on a space where fruit, vegetable and poultry vendors used to hawk their wares at the old Union Terminal Market.

Sonderman isn't sure how long the DCity pop-up would squat on the property. It could be one summer, it could be more. But he expects to start smoking meats for a "Texas-style barbecue" market in May or June. The menu will be a pared-down version of the one that convinced the $20 Diner to call DCity the best barbecue joint in the District. The pitmaster plans to sell meat by the pound along with sides, bread, pickles and beer. He even mentioned something about batch cocktails.

Please be advised that a large crane will be delivered to First and Thomas Streets, NW on Thursday, February 26 (See attached map for details). As a result of this delivery, DC Water and its Contractor, Skanska Jay-Dee will post temporary “NO PARKING” restrictions from 100 to199 on Thomas Street and at the intersection of Second and Thomas Streets, NW. These restrictions will be enforced from 9:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26 through 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27.

We apologize for any convenience this may cause you and we appreciate your cooperation.
