Good Morning,

As Randy mentioned at the June monthly meeting on Monday, a representative from the District Historic Preservation Office (HPO) will be at our July meeting to give a presentation about the historical significance of Eckington, what becoming a historic district means for a community, and to answer questions about the benefits and burdens to residents of such a designation. In anticipation of that presentation I thought it might be helpful to provide the community with some background information about the historic preservation process.

Attached are several documents about historic districts from the Historic Preservation Office (HPO) that I thought would be a useful resource for folks in the community ahead of next month’s presentation. The documents include:

· Two FAQ sheets from the Historic Preservation Office about Historic Districts
· A fact sheet about work requiring HPO approval within a historic district
· A fact sheet about work not requiring HPO approval within a historic district

In addition, I encourage you to check out the city's Small Area Plan for Mid City East from last year that, among other things, recommended pursuing historic district designations for Bloomingdale and Eckington. The full text of the report can be found here: http://planning.dc.gov/publication/mid-city-east-small-area-plan-one-pager

Best,
