Viewpoint: Appeals harm crucial D.C.projects

Vincent Orange is a former D.C. councilman and current president and CEO of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce.
With the D.C. government debating the next evolution of the Comprehensive Plan, now is the time to ensure we’re creating the policy infrastructure to meet all of the District’s needs. It is also a critical opportunity for us to address one of the city’s greatest challenges: creating more affordable housing.

Projects like RIA are examples of appeals excesses that undercut even the best community development efforts. If we’re to remain a prosperous, diverse and welcoming city, it is critical that the Comprehensive Plan put into place an appeals structure that ensures the community’s voice is heard, while eliminating the rampant abuses that endanger developments that clearly benefit the community as a whole.
