McMillan fountain; comments from the 09-24-2019, McMillan Advisory Group meeting

A neighbor who attended the Thursday, 09/24/2019, McMillan Advisory Group (MAG) meeting:

Hoping you could mention on your blog the plan to add the McMillan Fountain in its entirety above the NE corner of 1st and Channing Streets NW, as part of the new park at the proposed McMillan Development as discussed at the MAG meeting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMillan_Fountain

McMillan Fountain was completed in 1912 and stood near the corner of 1st and Bryant ST NW, on the opposite side of 1st ST NW from the Filtration Complex; where the proposed development is. The top portion of the fountain is currently located west of 1st ST NW between Channing ST and Michigan Avenue. The base parts of the fountain had been scattered at sites throughout the city. According to representatives from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, all parts of the original McMillan Fountain, which was similar in size to the Dupont Circle Fountain, have been collected. If any of the parts are damaged, they will be restored with rock from the same quarry in New York where the original stones were retrieved.

....And perhaps you could provide some type of recap of the MAG meeting, like below.

The main topic of focus for the night was current construction activity at the Filtration Complex site. Representatives from the Deputy Mayor’s Office confirmed that a demolition permit had been issued; however, they were clear that no demolition has taken place. The active work on the site involves removal of 2.5 feet of dirt that sits above the concrete filter cells.

The demolition permit was recently challenged. The Deputy Mayor’s Office expects to receive a decision from the courts in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, it will take at minimum 2-3 months to complete demolition prep; which is the removal of all of the dirt above the filter cells; and possibly the sand from within them. There has been quite a bit of confusion as the demolition prep at first glance looks like demolition.
