Lived on 2nd street for 17 years but finally sold the house and moved last month after having our first child. Major factor in leaving was the unrelenting crime; it was, I guess, ok for me to have been mugged twice in my time there but I am not willing to expose my kid to crap like the mid-day weekend shootings in the Park at Ledroit or the risk of her father getting hurt or killed by the next mugger. The sharp increase in DC's murder rate was a strong signal that it's time to leave. The buyer was an investor so the neighborhood has lost an invested homeowner and gained transient renters. Sad because I loved (most parts of) living there but I don't see this issue improving anytime soon given the politics.
