almost two miles from bloomingdale .. but i thought this was an interesting resurgence of an old.. and in dc, failed... idea.

I'm personally a big fan of pedestrian only areas....I also think that we will see this idea crop up more and more in DC.

here is some text from the website:

17th Street, between Massachusetts and New Hampshire is the ideal location for a pedestrian promenade
in Washington due to several factors:


· The vast majority of people arriving at the businesses in the neighborhood already arrive on foot, not by car

· The area is dominated by independent restaurants and small shops, which would benefit by increased
pedestrian traffic and the ability to use parts of the promenade for additional seating and space.

· The area is bounded on one end by residential areas and the other by dense office buildings, insuring
use of the promenade for both lunchtime and evening/weekend activities.

· Minimal traffic and no metrobus routes currently exist on 17th Street, and traffic could easily be
diverted to New Hampshire, 16th and 18th Streets with minimal disruption.

I went to the borf brigade event and the place was buzzing. I added the few pictures i took to the bloomingdale photo group

it was funny, a guy i met at the big bear/ north capitol main streets open house had mentioned that he talked to a few of the guys fixing up the building. He told a group of us that they were turning it into a gallery. we all actually laughed out loud.

The NCMS Open House at the Big Bear Cafe.

The North Capitol Main Streets Open House was a terrific event!





Main street inc put together a great spread and gave information about who they are, what they've done, and what they hope to do. Many people signed up to volunteer with them.




The President of the NoMa BID came out and talked briefly about their hopes of NoMa.




I talked tons of neighbors, a few that heard of the event because of this blog (!)
I learned about the pursuit of playground equipment for Crispus Attucks Park, the dream of an entrepreneurial neighbor to grow her healthy and tastey business in our neighborhood.




I met TONS of people from the Nebraska ( did you guys all come?)

I got to meet Harry Thomas who came in at the very end!
I saw the owner of Curves, but didnt get to talk with her.

InShaw and Truxton Circle websites were represented.

Ceci McInturff of the 87 Florida Gallery was there. She actually gave me a ride home from the ArtDC event at the convention center. thanks!

Stu and Lana are really terrific people. The hosted a great event and really brought people together.

Eckington Spring Clean 2007!

Spring clean up April 28th 2007
10am until 4pm

Please join THE Eckington civic association, Emery Elementary school, city year young heroes, Hands on DC, MCKinley technical high school, THE edgewood civic association, north capitol main street, xm satellite radio and the DPW helping hands Program. For the largest community improvement project we have ever held.


Where do we meet?
The event will start and finish at Emery Elementary School at 1720 First Street NE.
Our day will run from 10am until 4pm with a break for lunch at 12:30 at Emery where lunch will be provided. We will break up into teams and head out into the community to work.
Tools will be provided by City Year, DPW Helping Hands and Hands On DC.

What will we be doing?
There are a wide range of project you may work on, painting murals, gardening and weeding in pocket parks, cleaning streets and alleys, painting inside Emery, painting parking lot lines, creating a large tree box at the school.

Our goal is to clean from:
-North Capitol Street east to 4Th Street Ne
-Rhode Island Ave NE south to Florida Ave NE.

Collection points for the trash will be:
-First St NE at R St NE
-R St NE and Eckington Place NE
-4th St NE at V St. the corner of Lincoln Rd and Rhode Island Ave
-the corner of Seton and 3rd St.


Why should I take part in this project?
We need your support to make this happen. 100 of our high school and middle school young people will be taking part in the clean up. Your time and effort will make you a true agent of change for a better DC.

What: Launch of 811. The 811 “Call Before You Dig” event on the National Mall will formally “launch” the 811 number, mandated by Congress and established by the FCC.

As you may be aware, before beginning any digging project, local DIYers or professional landscapers are required to call Miss Utility to have a crew come out and mark their underground lines. Now, diggers can use a single three-digit number to reach Miss Utility and all other One Call Centers across the country—that number is 811.



Homeowners often make risky assumptions about whether or not they should get their utility lines marked, but every digging job requires a call—even small projects like planting trees and shrubs. Research shows that while 46% of Americans are active diggers who have done or plan to do a digging project at home, only 33% of DIY'ers plan on calling before they dig, which means they are taking a huge risk each time their shovel disturbs the dirt. And failure to call before digging results in more than one unintentional hit per minute, according to CGA research. Hitting an underground line can also lead to injury, penalties, repair costs and expensive and inconvenient service outages.

Until now, the piece de resistance of his National Harbor project has been a carefully guarded secret. In the coming months, the outdoor sculpture "The Awakening" will be dug up from Hains Point, its home for the past 27 years, then barged and trucked to an undisclosed location where it will be cleaned and restored.

Four former District school buildings that have been declared surplus property will be made available to charter schools for lease, the Office of Property Management said.

The agency announced plans to issue offers of solicitation for the following: Keene, at 33 Riggs Rd. NE; Langston and Slater, adjoining school buildings at 33 P St. NW and 45 P St. NW, which will be offered together; and Reno, at 4820 Howard St. NW.

Wireless Network Proposal: ANC 5C Commissioner Stuart Davenport , SMD 5C03, made a presentation regarding his interest in possibly constructing a wireless network in the Bloomingdale-Shaw East/Truxton Circle communities. Such a network would give residents of the immediate area free access to the World Wide Web and, in theory, could improve communications between and among residents as well as the members of indigenous neighborhood organizations. Commissioner Davenport envisions this project as one that would be implemented and maintained via the use of grant funding and a secondary benefit of the project concerns the educational value that it would have to those students from Dunbar Senior High School as well as the McKinley Technology High School who would be asked to actively participate in the actual construction of the network. At this point, Commissioner Davenport's ideas about the proposed network are very preliminary. Indeed, he will continue to work on them and keep us posted of further developments concerning this proposal as they ripen and are poised to be put into action.

Dear Engine Company 12 Neighbors,

As part of our ongoing efforts to communicate with our neighbors and friends as to the status of this historic neighborhood landmark, we're going to start producing some short newsletters to let all of you know the status of Engine Company 12's major redevelopment into a restaurant and destination in the North Capital area.

NC Firehouse, LLC. is proud to announce that we have just achieved a significant milestone in the redevelopment of Engine Company 12. We have just received the officially signed and executed contract for the purchase and redevelopment of EC12 from the city.

What does this mean?

Now that we have a signed contract, we can begin the work of renovating this old building into the beautiful landmark it deserves to be. We understand the visual blight an abandoned building brings to the neighborhood and we will work to reduce that as much as possible.

As part of our contract, the city has agreed to cooperate with us in expediting the permit process which can be very lengthy. Settlement of all fees and title transfer is keyed upon issuance of the permits or end of fiscal year, whichever is sooner. Construction drawings have to be completed and approved before we can apply for permits.

We’ve already done some cleanup on the outside of the property, and we would like to press on to some cosmetics for the building as well. While this is only a short term situation, at the moment we cannot do anything that requires permits. We also can’t make substantial improvements to a building that doesn’t yet officially belong to us.

While we continue working on basic cleanup, we will also be working with the architects and engineers to turn our conceptual drawings into construction plans. When these plans are complete, we can apply for permits from the city and then the construction side of the project can begin.

We are extremely proud and excited to have been selected as the developer for such an important project and we wish to thank the city, Ward 5 Councilman Harry Thomas Jr., and of course the neighbors of EC12 for the amazing support and cooperation we have received so far.

We look forward to working with you to rebuild and preserve this beautiful old building and create a place that we will all be proud of when it is done.

i can see some of their points, but i thought it was fine....

homes with parking spots.

For work i drive.
Since i do decorative artworks in peoples homes, i generally have lots of things to transport around. Ladders, buckets, paints, etc... Because of this i wanted to live in a place where i could easily park. While there is still easy parking in my corner of bloomingdale, and was a lot of easy parking on my street when i moved here, my realtor suggested that an offstreet parking spot weigh in my considerations.

Personally, i'm very glad i have alley parking. I can't say as its a nice spot, or that at times i'd prefer a more proper patio. It does allow me lazy nights of not wanting to unload things.

As for street parking, its really odd. Sometimes my street will go a week at 70% full, then sometimes even at 6PM you can't find a spot. It seems to be entirely random.

there is a thai restaurant that i have been to a lot in chinatown, Kanlaya.

Despite the fact they they deliver, and that my house is 5 minutes from them (4 minutes by mapquest) they won't deliver to me.

Sad. very sad. it would have been nice if they told us that when we called to order, instead of calling back when the delivery should have arrived.

the word from Kris Hammond ( ANC 5C-02) is that "J. Bell's" will be opening at the corner of p and north capitol within the next month.

Mr. Julius Bell is seeking a liquor license and approval from the 5C Advisory Neighborhood Commission. His plans also include a permit for a sidewalk cafe with 24 seats. He will be providing guests with a full menu.

bloomingdale farmers market/ EC-12

i've been away most of the month so i've been slow on the postings. what have i missed?


I saw this message from Stu Davenport, of Big Bear Cafe and ANC fame, concerning the Bloomingdale Farmers Market.



1. We have sent applications to farmers in the area of Gettysburg,
Richmond, and Middleburg, and we are working now on getting R street
closed once a week between 1st and Florida, NW. What was most
important a few weeks ago was to get community input from our surveys
on when the market should open, and then we could write the
applications stating the day the Farmers would show. Now that we have
such a strong response pushing for saturday as the market day, we can
work to get the permit from DDOT to close the street down. We can
then get formal commitment letters from the farmers so that things
will definitely start up in June...

2. In order to close the street down we need signatures from the
neighbors on R street, a letter of support from the ANC, and a traffic
control plan. We met with the ANC last week, and they will vote at the
next meeting to write the letter of support. We have also started
getting signatures from the residents on R by going door to door, and
we met with the head of DDOT who is walking us through thttp://www2.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifhe remainder
of the street closing process. I asked for a meeting with Sharlene
Reed, and when I meet with her on Wednesday I will ask her to help
draft the traffic control plan, and give basic information on DDOT
issues we have to be aware of.



The awaited news from Brian Brown about the firehouse on north capitol wasn't very telling. Basically, its still moving forward. they still expect the XM portion to happen. No ETA.

Saint Martins Zoning Variance Hearing.

st. Martin's Apartments Zoning Variance Hearing Tomorrow Night, Monday, 1/29/2007


Tomorrow night at 6:30 pm is the zoning hearing for the upzoning of the large lot in Eckington across from McKinley Tech from R-4 to R-5-B.

The zoning classifications are described here:

there has been a lot of discussion on the community boards and blogs about brick sidewalks. r street nw is getting them. s street nw just got them. r ne is supposed to get them. some residents are thrilled, others a bit smug. personally i love the brick sidewalks but am a bit indifferent about fighting to get them. i agree with many that our efforts might be put to better use. I wonder though about the budgetary lines and if getting brick sidewalks really means not getting something else.

i'd like to start a pro/con list about brick sidewalks. this is assuming the brick vs concrete argument. i know there are other choices too.
please comment with your points.

1. very attractive.
2. allows water to reach root system of trees.
3. ease to repair
4. befitting of the old character/materials of the neighborhood.
5. the whole broken windows theory.



Con's
1. Money
2. hard to shovel snow
3. hard to clean
4. bad for the handicapped

6. Spalting
7. roots can easily cause uneveness in sidewalk
9 provokes tension over "gentrification" and appearance over people argument.
10. would expel a lot of community effort to get them

Lets face it, the Washington Post fails us. It fails us in providing two types of news that i crave, and at least one that you crave. Local news and local arts coverage. You are probably reading this because neighborhood blogs have news the News media doesn't.

The post, despite a real journalists natural aversion to blogs, recognizes this.
This past week they sponsored a meeting of some local bloggers to discuss working together.

I will gladly plug local business here, but for the sake of economic and pedestrian and cultural revitalization, not for just making a buck.

Police Investigate Two Home Invasion Burglaries in Northwest
The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in attempting to identify and locate the suspect or suspects responsible for two Burglary One While Armed robberies.

The first case occurred at approximately 7:57 pm, on Wednesday, December 27, 2006. A lone male, armed with a handgun, entered a home in the 1800 block of 4th Street, NW through an unlocked back door. Once inside, he robbed the occupants of a camera, jewelry, cell phone, personal digital assistant and a handbag. There were no reported injuries. The suspect in this case is described as a black male, 25 to 35 years old, 6’2” tall, 180 to 185 pounds, with a medium complexion. He was wearing dark clothing and armed with a handgun.

The second case occurred at approximately 9:15 pm, on Friday, December 29, 2006. Two subjects, one armed with a handgun, entered a home in the 1500 block of Vermont Avenue, NW through an unlocked front door. Once inside, they tied up the occupant before taking a wallet with cash and credit cards, two cameras, cell phone and keys to a yellow Hummer. The suspects took the Hummer but abandoned it at 12th and Q Streets, NW. There were no reported injuries. The first suspect in this case is described only as a male, 6’2” tall, wearing a mask and dark clothing, and armed with a handgun. The second suspect in this case is described only as a female, approximately 5’3” tall, and wearing a mask and dark clothing.

The two cases are under investigation by detectives assigned to the MPDC’s Third District. Anyone with information about these cases is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099. The Department currently offers a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any robbery committed in the District of Columbia.

The Department also reminds residents, as a precaution, to keep the doors to their homes locked at all times, even when they are inside or in their yards. Residents of multi-unit apartment and condominium buildings should never buzz in a person they do not know.
