Mayoral Candidate Reta Jo Lewis Endorses McMillan Park

Reta Jo Lewis, the District’s newest candidate for mayor, has taken a strong stand for saving the sand filtration portion of the former McMillan reservoir site as park.  She did so in her mayoral announcement on Saturday afternoon, citing the McMillan controversy as an example of the DC Government not listening to its residents.

“…Our government is attempting to move forward on a construction project of massive proportions at the old McMillan Park Reservoir…despite the residents asking for some green space, and – at a minimum – a plan that preserves the historic heritage of the space,” she said. “I’m proud to say that I am signing their petition,” Lewis declared, to cheers and applause.  She thereby joins the more than 5,000 people who have already signed to save McMillan as a park

“We welcome Reta Jo Lewis’ ringing support for saving McMillan,” said Kirby Vining, a Stronghold resident.  “Ms. Lewis clearly understands how important it is for the DC Government to have an open competition to design McMillan’s future.  This is the only way we will get to a world class park that serves the neighborhood, Ward 5 and the city as a whole.”

Ms. Lewis is the second mayoral candidate to sign the McMillan petition, Councilmember Jack Evans was the first. Candidate and Councilmember Muriel Bowser has refused to sign.
