Has anyone had success with effective (temporary) mosquito control in a residential yard, either by hiring a company to treat or a do-it-yourself method, that you would recommend? We'd like to have a birthday party in our backyard and don't want our guests to get eaten alive by Bloomingdale's ubiquitous pest!

We've had a lot of success with Malathion. You can spray it yourself. Do it the day before your event and there should be no smell leftover.

We've had great success with hatching mantids. Stay with me now, they aren't as scary as you think! As an organic insect control method, the praying mantis is very effective. With a voracious appetite, the mantid will feed on just about any pest insect. You hatch them where you need pest control, and they take care of the rest. You can buy nests online, put them outside in the early summer, and in a few weeks, you'll have baby mantids feasting on mosquitoes! It really does work, something to think about for next summer....
Thanks!
I thought malathion causes brain damage--maybe there's something more "natural" that someone can recommend. We use a citronella plant but maybe there's a citronella spray or something. And the mosquitoes are very nasty this year probably due to the flooding...
last year I bought a new house and we have a big garden so we were so tensed because of mosquitoes we hired a pest control service. This is my personal experienced with them they did so fantastically job they have new equipments they know how to treat them and they have effective sprays results was great. Now we are mosquito free now.
