Violence in the District

The "Center for Firearm
Violence Prevention Research Establishment Act of 2019" would
establish the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Research
(Center) in the District of Columbia. The Center would address the
nature and impacts of firearm violence on individuals and
communities. The Center, modeled after the successful
California-based Firearm Violence Research Center, would be housed
at an academic research institution in the District and would be
required to produce a report every three years on grants made,
pending grants, program accomplishments, and the future direction
of the program.

"As
of this morning, there have been 20 homicides in the District of
Columbia, a 54% increase over this same time last year," Councilmember McDuffie said upon introduction
of the legislation, "This
is unacceptable. I’ve had many conversations with residents about
the violence taking place across communities. We talked about their
grief, fear, and feelings of helplessness. Violent crime is a
public health crisis and we need a holistic, evidence-based
approach grounded in research to combat this issue."
