Greetings Neighbors!

This Saturday, September 7, 2019, DC Water’s contractor will be conducting equipment repairs and maintenance at the Florida Avenue NW construction site. Neighbors may experience some noise associated with these activities. It is possible that crews may occasionally work on Saturdays conducting maintenance of equipment and other activities during normal working hours from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Thank you for your patience.

DC Water’s contractor will begin removing portions of medians on Rhode Island Avenue NW between 2nd Street NW and Florida Avenue NW. The work will be done in two phases and will take approximately three weeks to complete. On or about September 12, 2019, work will begin to remove a portion of the median between 3rd Street NW and Florida Avenue NW. Following completion of that work the contractor will remove a portion of the median between 3rd Street NW and 2nd Street NW. Travel lanes on Rhode Island Avenue NW will be reduced to two lanes in each direction. Removal of any trees will be replaced with the restoration of the medians at the end of the project. The removal of the median was coordinated with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).

Removing the medians will allow room for traffic lane shifts on Rhode Island Avenue NW around the construction site. In an upcoming construction phase the contractor will occupy the median space to prepare the ground for connection to the Northeast Boundary Tunnel.

Travel and Parking Restrictions
  • Traffic on Rhode Island Avenue NW will be reduced to two lanes in each direction.
  • Parking restrictions in both directions of Rhode Island Avenue NW will be in place between New Jersey Avenue NW and North Capitol Street NW.
Pedestrian Detour
  • Pedestrians will be directed around the construction work on Rhode Island Avenue NW where crosswalks will be temporarily closed.

Additional Information
  • People who live or work near the affected locations will notice additional construction equipment and personnel as well as noise associated with construction activities.
  • Commuters and pedestrians will notice road signs and/or flagging personnel directing them safely around the worksite.
  • Pedestrians will notice signage for the closed crosswalks. Please follow the detours. Always use caution when walking around or near an active construction site.
Project Details
When placed into service in 2023, the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) will add approximately 90 million gallons of storage for sanitary sewage and stormwater. The ongoing work at the Florida Street NW construction site will connect a new diversion facility to the NEBT and that will help to reduce the chronic flooding which DC neighborhoods have struggled with for over 100 years.
