Mayor Vincent C. Gray to Announce Establishment of Flooding Prevention Task Force for Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park
Task Force to Recommend Strategies to Mitigate Effects of Floods that Follow Heavy Rains
WHAT/WHO:Mayor Vincent. C. Gray, Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie, representatives from D.C. Water and District government agencies, and residents of the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods will announce the establishment of a task force charged with finding ways to prevent flooding in the area.
WHEN: Tuesday, August 21, 2012
11:30 a.m.
WHERE: Shae Kims Memorial Park
111 Florida Avenue NW
(triangle bordered by Florida Avenue, R Street and 1st Street NW)
BACKGROUND: During a two-week period in July, low-lying portions of the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods were inundated three times by flood waters following heavy downpours. Significant property damage resulted from water and raw sewage backing up into homes and businesses in the area. Aging drainage infrastructure in these and nearby communities has been a recurring problem over the past 20 years, and the new task force will help create mitigation strategies to prevent future flooding.
