A massive tunnel-boring machine working beneath First Street NW since July has completed a 2,700-foot tunnel designed to help reduce sewer overflows into the Anacostia River and flooding in parts of the District, utility officials said Tuesday.

The First Street tunnel, between Channing Street and Rhode Island Avenue, should begin operating in summer after D.C. Water connects it with nearby sewer lines, said utility spokesman John Lisle. He said the machine finished its digging 100 feet below ground Saturday.
