DC Launches First-of-Its Kind App and Initiative to Help Victims of Sexual Assault and Dating Violence
 
This week, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Paul Quander and the Mayor’s Office of Victim Services (OVS) joined community-service providers, leading experts in sexual-assault prevention, and law-enforcement officials from throughout the DC area to launch a new, District-wide initiative to address sexual assault and dating violence through the use of technology. The Assault. Services. Knowledge. DC, or ASK DC, initiative features a mobile application, a website and training components aimed at providing resources and raising awareness for victims of sexual assault and dating violence. 
 
The ASK DC app is available for free download in the iTunes App Store, Google Play Store or BlackBerry App World and is compatible with BlackBerry, iOS and Android OS devices. To read more about the program, click here.
 
Ward 5 Night at the Shakespeare Theater
  
The Shakespeare Theater Company will host its Ward 5 night on Friday, August 30th at 7:30PM for the production of Much Ado About Nothing. A limited number of free tickets will be available for Ward 5 residents.
 
To obtain tickets, residents may contact Chanelle Harris at 202-724-8028 or charris@dccouncil.us no later than Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Tickets will be available for pickup from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 30th at the Theater’s Sidney Harman Hall, located 610 F Street, NW. The show begins promptly at 8 p.m. You may only request two tickets per household as seating is limited.

Norton to Host Annual Job Fair
 
On August 21, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton will host her annual Job Fair from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center. The job fair will feature over 80 employers with opportunities for federal, state, local and private-sector jobs, and jobs for recent graduates and is free, but open to D.C. residents only. Job-seekers must bring resumes and proof of D.C. residency (photo ID, voter registration card, pay stub, utility bill, or lease).

Public Input Sought on Pepco’s Rate Application
 
The Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia (Commission) seeks input on the rate application submitted by the Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) requesting authority to increase existing distribution service rates and charges for electric service in the District of Columbia. Pepco seeks a revenue rate increase of $51.75 million. Pepco is the sole distributor of electric power to homes and businesses in the District; hence the Commission will set Pepco’s distribution service rates in this rate case and not the cost of electricity itself.
 
The Commission will convene four (4) community hearings at the following locations on the specified dates:

DC Parent & Family Engagement Summit 
 
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) invites residents to attend the Second Annual DC Parent & Family Engagement Summit: Passport to Excellence on Saturday, September 7th from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
Passport to Excellence is a day-long event designed to empower, inform and inspire over 500 parents and families in the District of Columbia by providing vital information and resources to promote successful educational outcomes for their children. Reminder: Volunteers Needed for the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington
 
On August 28, 2013, individuals from across the country will converge upon the District to commemorate and celebrate the historic March on Washington, which occurred 50 years ago on August 28, 1963. The Mayor’s Committee on the 50th Anniversary March on Washington is seeking volunteers. If interested, please contact Reginald Greer at reginaldwgreer@gmail.com or call 940-704-7692. 
For those between the ages of 15 and 22, there will be a Youth Ambassador corps that will help to greet and host out of town visitors, providing directions and information about the event. All volunteers will receive special t-shirts and credentials.
 
Reminder: DCPS Beautification Day 2013
 
Beautification Day will be held this year on Saturday, August 24, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) event was established in 2005 as a citywide “spruce up” of all D.C. public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school. Beautification efforts will include landscaping, trash pick-up, light painting, planting flowers, and other external beautification efforts. Volunteers and supplies are needed at over 100 schools.
